James Tibbs III has been a one-man wrecking crew over the last two weeks.
The former Boston Red Sox prospect is tearing up Triple-A for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was already on fire before launching three solo home runs and a single against the Las Vegas Aviators on Saturday. Incredibly, his Oklahoma City Comets still lost, 8-5, falling to 4-4 in Pacific Coast League play despite Tibbs' torrid start.
That makes seven homers in eight games for Tibbs, who's slashing an absurd .514/.564/1.286 with four doubles, a triple, 13 RBI and 15 runs over 39 plate appearances in his first taste of Triple-A.
His hot start has been tough for Red Sox fans to watch amid their team's sluggish start to the season. Boston briefly had him in its farm system last summer after acquiring him in the Rafael Devers trade, only to send him to the Dodgers at the trade deadline in a package for Dustin May.
The move quickly backfired for the Red Sox. Not only did May struggle for them down the stretch before getting hurt and leaving in free agency, but Tibbs has also done nothing but rake since joining LA's farm system.
If he keeps hitting like this, the 23-year-old slugger will likely debut with the Dodgers later this season. Meanwhile, Boston can only hope he eventually cools down and makes the trade look less lopsided.
