Quarterback Brock Purdy is heading into his fourth season leading the San Francisco 49ers and fifth of his NFL career. And while his time in the league has been one of a meteoric rise from Mr. Irrelevant to quality starter, former quarterback Matt Hasselbeck doesn't think Purdy gets the respect he deserves for what he's done in the league.
Hasselbeck told Tyler Dunne of Go Long this week that Purdy is the most underrated quarterback in the NFL because, despite his stature, he's one of the best players at the position.
"People don’t give respect to Brock Purdy the way he deserves respect," Hasselbeck said. "That dude is a baller. And they love to use these other excuses, and I get it — he doesn’t have, like, this physically dominating presence when you meet him. … He is as much of a baller as there is in the NFL when it comes to running the show as a quarterback, clutch factor, technique, accuracy, mobility, moxxy. I don’t know why he doesn’t get the respect."
Despite missing almost half of the season in 2025, Purdy still finished the year with a 69.4% completion rate, 2,167 passing yards, 20 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He led the 49ers to win six of the team's final seven games, but lost in an NFC West title showdown with the eventual Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks.
Purdy has his flaws, but he proved this past season that he can overcome adversity and win without a star-studded team. He didn't have No. 1 receiver Brandon Aiyuk all season and had a carousel of different pass-catchers throughout the year between Ricky Pearsall, Kendrick Bourne, Jauan Jennings and Demarcus Robinson. Yes, George Kittle and Christian McCaffrey were there and made life easier, but was a season full of issues that Purdy overcame to lead San Francisco to the playoffs.
Now, heading into 2026, Purdy has a much different supporting cast than he did to start this past season. The 49ers replaced Aiyuk, Bourne and Jennings with Mike Evans and Christian Kirk (and maybe a rookie?), and Purdy will play with Jake Tonges at tight end while Kittle recovers from an Achilles injury.
Purdy may not be considered a top-5 or even top-10 quarterback in the league, but Hasselbeck says he at least deserves more respect than what he's received thus far in his young career.
