Ex-MLB Star Perfectly Sums Up Why Red Sox Fans Are So Frustrated originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
It's still early, but this season has been a major letdown so far for the Boston Red Sox. Not only are they last in the AL East and 10 games below .500, but they've also lost six of their last seven games and have been historically bad at Fenway Park this year.
Accordingly, Red Sox fans are not happy with the state of the team, which is in danger of missing the playoffs for the sixth time in the last eight years.
Boston's underperformance is frustrating on its own, as the team's young core has not delivered the immediate success that Red Sox fans were looking for. It's still extremely early in their careers, but Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer, Kristian Campbell, Triston Casas and others have largely been hurt or ineffective to date.
While Boston's prospects haven't lived up to the hype, many former Red Sox stars are thriving elsewhere after being traded or allowed to leave in free agency, including Chris Sale, Kyle Harrison, Rafael Devers, Mookie Betts, Xander Bogaerts and others. Their success has only exacerbated the frustrations of Boston fans.

"I think Boston is probably more upset about all of those trades not working in their favor. The play at home has also been abysmal. It's actually shocking how bad it's been," former MLB star Trevor Plouffe said on Friday's episode of "Baseball Today." "I think overall, though, they're more upset about these trades that have gone awry."
The Red Sox have made some great trades, too, namely for Garrett Crochet, Sonny Gray and Willson Contreras. However, their success hasn't been enough to outweigh the poor returns for generational stars such as Sale, Betts and Devers.
Boston's struggles at home, where the team is 9-19 and has only won one series this year, have also been inexplicable for a franchise that has historically dominated at Fenway. The offense has also been unusually bad, ranking near the bottom of the league in many categories and squandering the team's elite defense and starting pitching.
"They're a disappointing watch right now," Plouffe added. "I like the starting pitching... The bullpen has good arms... The offense has been non-existent. The bottom half of their lineup is just bad."
There's still time to fix that before the trade deadline, but as Craig Breslow himself and others have noted, that may not be easy if the American League stays so compressed.
