Three-time major winner Anna Nordqvist made history at the Amundi Evian Championship with her share of seventh. According to Elias Sports Bureau, Nordqvist became the first current Solheim Cup captain to finish in the top 10 of any major during a Solheim Cup year.
Only one current Solheim Cup captain has ever finished among the top 20 of any major during a Solheim year, with Catrin Nilsmark placing T-15 at the Kraft Nabisco in 2003.
Nordqvist shot 66 in the final round at Evian Resort Golf Club to post her first top-10 finish in three years. Her 13-under total makes her the first current Solheim Cup player to finish under par in any major during a Solheim Cup year, according to Elias. Juli Inkster finished even par at the 2017 Evian Championship.
Three weeks ago, Nordqvist became the first Solheim Cup captain to make the cut at the KPMG Women's PGA during a Solheim Cup year.
"I mean, like I've gone through hell and back the last couple years," said Nordqvist, "so I'm really proud of myself for never giving up, for fighting those days when it seems really dark.
"Just been really nice to start feeling like myself a little bit this week, or this year in general."
The woman who leads Europe at the 2026 Solheim Cup at Bernardus Golf in the Netherlands has been battle tested in ways she wouldn’t wish on anyone. Three years ago, not long after Nordqvist revealed on social media that she and husband Kevin McAlpine, an LPGA caddie, were in the process of a divorce, McAlpine died suddenly at age 39.
Nordqvist once described it as watching her life shatter into a thousand pieces.
Then came health struggles, including surgery to remove a cyst the size of a grapefruit. Mercifully, it was benign.
Nordqvist said some of the European players have suggested that she pick herself for the team. The Swede, who has been a part of every Euro team since 2009, said it's hard to do both. When the European team gets together for practice next week at Bernardus, she'll be in a golf cart watching.
The 39-year-old admitted it has been hard to keep up with her game and the demands of the captaincy.
"It's been a learning curve for me, too," she said. "Looking back at it, I don't know if I took a little bit too much on.
"But I also embraced it. I wanted to do this journey with the girls and just be out here and know what's going on and just be able to be supportive."
