It's only the start of draft week, but the New Orleans Saints have already begun doing the groundwork to cut deals in trades with other teams. And as usual under longtime general manager Mickey Loomis, they're looking to move up, not down.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Monday morning that the Saints have "made exploratory calls about trading up in Round 2." So while the Saints are content to stay content at No. 9 in the first round, they're preparing for the possibility of moving up from No. 40. And they're looking to add a quarterback. Schefter added, that, "In the eyes of some around the league, It's possible there could be more signal-callers selected in the first eight picks on Friday than there are in the 32 picks on Thursday."
Whether that means the Saints could be targeting Shedeur Sanders in a fall or looking to leapfrog their competition for someone like Jaxson Dart (Ole Miss), Jalen Milroe (Alabama), or Tyler Shough (Louisville), they're clearly looking for help under center. And it makes a lot of sense given their circumstances. Given Derek Carr's uncertain status, Spencer Rattler's lack of success as a rookie, and first-year head coach Kellen Moore's desire to get his own quarterbacks in the building, it makes for a perfect storm for a bold trade up -- especially with Loomis at the wheel.
If the Saints feel like a run on quarterbacks is coming on Friday night, and if they're determined to add one, it makes sense to do this legwork now, at least from their point of view. You just have to wonder if it's really the right move for this team. Their depth chart is old and expensive. The easiest way to make it young and affordable is by drafting a lot of rookies. Packaging the picks they just got for trading Marshon Lattimore (which brought in extra selections in Rounds 3 and 4) to go get a quarterback who isn't good enough for them to draft a round sooner is questionable. Loomis has made questionable decisions before, and gotten burned for it. His 49-66 record without Sean Payton is all the proof you need. We'll just have to see how things pan out in the 2025 NFL draft, but as always, the Saints are expected to make it dramatic.
