ESPN's panel of insiders placed the Dallas Mavericks 23rd in its offseason power rankings, the same spot the team held after the NBA Finals.
Morez Johnson Jr., Santi Aldama, Marcus Sasser, and Zaccharie Risacher were listed as the notable additions. Khris Middleton and Marvin Bagley III were the departures. Team president Masai Ujiri is taking a patient approach and building around Cooper Flagg. Multiple veterans are available in trades. Kyrie Irving is not one of them.
Dallas finished 26-56 last season. Flagg, the Rookie of the Year, put up 21.0 points, 6.7 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1.2 steals.
Ujiri was hired on May 4. Fifteen days later, the Mavericks and Jason Kidd parted ways. Mike Schmitz came in as general manager. Dallas hired Dusty May as head coach on June 23.
Four prospects came out of the draft. Dallas took Johnson Jr. ninth. Later in the first round the Mavericks moved up five spots for Sergio de Larrea, sending the New York Knicks the thirtieth pick and two second-rounders. Tobi Lawal went to Dallas at 48 on a two-way deal. The Mavericks sent cash to the Los Angeles Lakers for the rights to Vsevolod Ishchenko at 56.
A six-team trade brought Aldama, Sasser, and the draft rights to Tarik Biberovic. On July 19, Dallas acquired Risacher from Atlanta in a three-team deal, sending Ryan Nembhard the other way. Risacher's $13.8 million salary went into the $20.8 million trade exception created by the Anthony Davis deal in February.
Roughly $15.6 million remains on that exception. Dallas also has the full $15 million non-taxpayer midlevel exception available.
The veterans to watch are Klay Thompson, P.J. Washington, and Daniel Gafford. Thompson enters the final year of his contract at $17.5 million. There are three seasons and $54 million left on Gafford's. Washington's runs four more years at $88.8 million, every dollar of it guaranteed, and counts $19.8 million against the cap this season.
Los Angeles sits eleventh, twelve spots up on Dallas and two lower than where the panel had the Lakers after the Finals. Once LeBron James told them he was leaving, the Lakers began retrofitting around Luka Dončić. The first move was a sign-and-trade for Walker Kessler. Los Angeles gave him four years and $130 million. Utah got two unprotected first-round picks and two future pick swaps.
Kyrie Irving is returning from a torn ACL. Dereck Lively II, Max Christie, Naji Marshall, and Caleb Martin are also back.
The preseason begins in China against the Houston Rockets. It is the franchise's first trip there since 2018.
To keep Moussa Cissé, Dallas matched a two-year, $4.7 million offer sheet from the Knicks. Jett Howard signed a two-way deal. Ishchenko has not signed anywhere. That leaves the Mavericks at 16 standard contracts, with all three two-way spots taken.
