SLIDELL, La. (WGNO) – Pope John Paul II has been living on the edge throughout the District 9-2A tournament.
The Jaguars beat Northlake Christian 2-1 in a 12-inning thriller, after rallying from a two-run deficit to beat Pearl River 9-7 in eight frames, but the team’s luck ran out against French Settlement.
The Jags and Lions faced off in Slidell in a district championship rematch.
Pope John Paul II beat French Settlement last season to claim the 2025 district title.
This year’s rendition was dead even through four innings, but the 4-4 score past the halfway mark wad due to the Jags’ self-inflicted wounds.
With a 3-1 advantage in the top of the third, a fielding error allowed the Lions to make it a one-run game.
Later in the top of the frame with runners on the corners, a French Settlement runner at first attempted to steal second. The Jaguars’ catcher could not get the out, and the runner at third stole home to even the game.
Pope John Paul II went down 4-3 in the fourth but Luke Campbell’s RBI double tied the game once again.
However, the sixth inning was where the game fell apart.
The Jaguars failed to pick-off another base runner, and once again, the throw from second base to home was an errant pass, which allowed the Lions to plate the go-ahead run.
Following an RBI single, Bryce Valle hit a chopper to short, but the Jags’ infielder threw an errant pass to first. Valle safely made it to first, while Maddox and Cooper Bouillon crossed home plate.
The Jaguars committed four errors in the frame and only managed two runs the rest of the game.
Pope John Paul II lost to French Settlement 8-6 in the District 9-2A championship.
