FOXBORO — The first time, he roared to the crowd and embraced teammates. The second time, he stoically strutted to the sideline.
Erling Haaland is relishing the World Cup spotlight.
The 25-year-old star, in his first-ever appearance in the tournament, scored two first-half goals as Norway secured a 4-1 victory over Iraq in Group I at Boston Stadium on Tuesday, June 16. It stands as Norway's first win in the tournament since 1998.
Norway (1-0) returns to action against Senegal (0-1) at New York/New Jersey Stadium on Monday, June 22 at 8 p.m.
The first World Cup goal of Haaland's career rifled through the Iraq defense on a cross from Antonio Nusa in the 29th minute, and he tapped in the second after swiping it away from Iraq keeper Jalal Hassan in the 43rd minute. Norway commanded a 2-1 lead at the half. He nearly had a hat trick in stoppage time, but when he played a header into traffic in the box, it deflected off Iraq's Aymen Hussein for an own goal.
Haaland became Norway's all-time leading scorer at 24 years old in October, 2024. In total, he's up to 58 goals — including six hat tricks — in 52 appearances for the national team. He scored 27 goals and 8 assists in 35 matches for Manchester City in the Premier League last season.
The win over Iraq, which also featured a goal by Leo Ostigard, is the nation's third all-time in the World Cup and first since 1998 — its most recent appearance.
The first-half scoring sequence had Haaland on pace to net the first World Cup hat trick since Kylian Mbappe's for France in the Final vs. Argentina in 2022, all while the back of his jersey read 'Braut Haaland' in honor of his parents.
Braut is his mother's maiden name, and his father, Alf-Inge Haaland, was a defender for Manchester City and a member of the Norway national team that qualified for the World Cup in 1994.
Erling Haaland was next in line. Certainly, he has arrived.
