Chester-le-Street's rain-soaked non-event has left this five-match series deadlocked before it has properly begun, and so it falls to Old Trafford on Saturday to give everyone the contest which was promised to them.
That opening night had promised much before the weather intervened. India, sent in, slipped to 6-2 inside the first two overs before Abhishek Sharma tore into the England attack. He scored 59 from just 24 balls, including a Saqib Mahmood over that leaked 21 runs.
Shreyas Iyer then anchored the innings with a composed 68, while Shivam Dube's unbeaten 42 helped India plunder 64 in the last six overs to reach 189-7. England never got a chance to reply, with steady drizzle turning to heavier rain and the match was abandoned.
There's history here too, and it doesn't exactly flatter England. India have won four of the last five meetings between these sides, that solitary bright spot for England coming back in January 2025.
India's T20 form lately has been nothing like you'd expect from the world champions. That series defeat to Ireland was a genuine shock and their bowling in particular has looked short on answers once you take them out of familiar conditions.
Manchester's surface could offer something for the spinners and Varun Chakravarthy may find himself central to India's plans if the pitch gives him anything to work with.
There's also the small matter of Sanju Samson, named player of the series at the T20 World Cup but yet to really fire with the bat since and another quiet outing here would only add to the questions being asked of him, especially when Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is waiting in the wings!
England, for their part are a little undercooked. They haven't played a full T20 international since that 7-run defeat to India on March 5, the result that ended their World Cup semi-final hopes, so there's a first-match feel to this despite everything that's gone before. Even so, they'll go in favourites at home. It should be tight. But India, needing a response, might just find one.

Old Trafford tends to offer a fairly even contest between bat and ball, with a touch of turn for the spinners. Chasing has generally worked better here, though scores above 180 have been tricky to score.
