Aug. 12—EAST GRAND FORKS — East Grand Forks Senior High goaltender Emma Pieper was invited to attend USA Hockey's Women's National Festival earlier this month in Lake Placid, N.Y.
It went quite well.
Based on her performance at the camp, Pieper has been picked to play for the U.S. Under-18 Women's Select Team during a three-game series against Canada this week.
The Select team will play Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at the Olympic Oval in Richmond, B.C., a suburb of Vancouver.
Pieper is one of 25 players to make the roster. She is one of three goaltenders.
The team features top 2009- and 2010-born players.
"That's a great opportunity for anybody, but having a player from our community there is huge," Green Wave coach Mak Langei said. "I think it will be a lot of new emotions. You're getting to represent your country, which is a huge accomplishment and a huge honor. You're getting to play with the best players in your country and in their country. You definitely learn a lot about your style of play and other styles of play.
"I told her to be a sponge and do whatever role they want her to do."
Langei, a former East Grand Forks defender, played in the three-game series while in high school. The Americans won it that year in St. Catharines, Ont.
Pieper played 12 games for the Green Wave last season, splitting time with Reese Kvasager in net.
The 5-foot-6 Pieper posted a 5-6-1 record with a 3.10 goals-against average, an .898 save percentage and a shutout.
The Green Wave reached the Section 8A final before falling to Warroad.
"She's very determined and very athletic," Langei said. "Her style of play is unique compared to a lot of goalies at the high school level right now, where she has that more athletic and agile ability."
Last year's Green Wave head coach, Chad Kleinvachter, said he's excited for Pieper's opportunity.
"Emma earned it and deserves her spot," he said.
