Jul. 30—GRAND FORKS — The Grand Forks Spitfires will close their inaugural season this weekend at Albrecht Field.
They will not bring home a title in Year 1.
A four-game losing streak this week cost the Spitfires a spot in the Northwoods League championship series.
The Northwoods League posted on Thursday that the Wausau Ignite clinched the No. 2 seed with their victory Wednesday night.
Wausau (21-18) will play top-seeded Madison (33-6) in a best-of-three series next week.
Grand Forks (19-19) will host Minot at 7:05 p.m. Friday and 7:35 p.m. Saturday at Albrecht Field in their final two games. There will be fireworks after Saturday's game.
The Spitfires dropped games on Tuesday and Wednesday in Minot.
Grand Forks players and San Diego State teammates Mattison Kwarta and Shannon Cunningham have been two of the best in the Northwoods League this summer.
Kwarta ranks fourth in batting average (.461), third in home runs (13) and third in runs batted in (51).
Cunningham ranks sixth in average (.447), seventh in home runs (nine) and ninth in runs batted in (36).
Grand Forks ranks third in the Northwoods League in batting average, runs and home runs.
The Spitfires have the highest ERA in the league, though, at 8.09.
