An Indiana kid who once was a Hoosiers basketball student manager is making a huge move.
Dusty May, who coached Michigan to the 2026 NCAA championship, is taking the coaching job with the NBA's Dallas Mavericks, according to ESPN.
May, who attended Eastern Greene High School, was a student manager for coach Bob Knight's last four teams from 1996-2000.
He bounced around college basketball as an assistant coach at many programs before Florida Atlantic hired him as coach in 2018. May spent six seasons at FAU, leading the Owls to the Final Four in 2023.
Michigan hired May in 2024, and the Wolverines won the national title in 2026.
Dallas fired Jason Kidd as coach after the season. IU alumnus Mark Cuban is a partial owner of the Mavericks, but he stated on social media earlier this month: "Just a reminder. I have absolutely zero to do with Mavs basketball. Nothing. Nada."
On his way to a title: Is Dusty May the Curt Cignetti of college basketball?
Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy, a Michigan superfan, was on the verge of tears.

There is no doubt Dusty leaving is a huge blow to the basketball program. It’s the price of success. I’m not mad at anybody. It just sucks for us.
