While Michigan basketball has been able to hold onto the majority of its players after coach Dusty May left for the Dallas Mavericks, its coaching staff has taken a bit of a hit.

Drew Williamson, an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Wolverines the past two seasons, has left U-M and joined the Mavericks' staff as an assistant coach, a source with knowledge of the situation but permitted to speak anonymously told the Free Press.

Williamson was selected to participate in the 2026 TopConnect Basketball Symposium earlier this summer − an invitation-only leadership development event featuring 50 emerging coaches and athletics administrators.

FAREWELL: Dusty May's final message to Michigan basketball revealed

As of Thursday, July 9, Williamson was still listed on the team's staff directory. But a video on social media before the Mavericks' first NBA Las Vegas Summer League game showed him in Mavs gear throwing passes to former Michigan big man Morez Johnson Jr., Dallas's first-round pick last month.

Williamson's new job with May makes it three members of last year's national championship staff departed; former U-M assistant Justin Joyner took over as Oregon State coach soon after U-M cut down the nets in Indianapolis in April.

Interim coach Mike Boynton Jr. will now have two positions to fill: In addition to Williamson, Mody Maor – hired by May to replace Joyner – has also accepted a role with the Mavericks.

Maor, 40, previously served as a head coach for the Nagasaki Velca in the Japanese B. League as well as the New Zealand Breakers of Australia's National Basketball League.

It's not yet clear if there will be other U-M staffers joining May in the NBA.
