The San Antonio Spurs suffered one of the most crushing losses in NBA history on Wednesday night, blowing a 29-point lead over the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden.
The Spurs looked primed to tie the NBA Finals series at 2-2, but now trail 3-1 heading into Game 5. The game was decided by a game-winning tip-in from OG Anunoby, who crashed the glass untouched after a missed three-point attempt from Jalen Brunson.
If the Spurs were able to hold onto their lead, they would have reclaimed home-court advantage heading back to San Antonio. Now, they have their backs against the wall as the Knicks are one win away from the franchise’s first NBA title since 1973.
After the game, Golden State Warriors veteran and ESPN NBA analyst Draymond Green said this loss could have a disastrous impact on the Spurs’ future.
“Everyone was talking about OKC having a dynasty, then the Spurs come along this year and everybody’s like ‘Yo, for the next 10 years [they’ll have a dynasty].’ That’s the type of loss that can derail what you’re possibly gonna become,” Green said.
