United States President Donald Trump has been impossible to ignore throughout the 2026 FIFA World Cup, culminating with his high-profile appearance at Sunday afternoon’s final between Spain and Argentina. However, it’s safe to say that the event did not exactly go according to plan for the president.
Between getting booed multiple times, being awkwardly pulled away from the stage during Spain’s victory celebration, and being forced to hand the World Cup trophy to a team representing a country he publicly bashed just days before, Sunday was more humiliating than celebratory for Trump.
Trump Booed Multiple Times
While Trump likely hoped for a warm reception from the crowd at Sunday’s match, that is not what he got as he was booed by the crowd on multiple occasions.
The first time Trump was booed by the crowd came during the playing of the United States National Anthem. While fans were largely respectful of the performance of the song itself despite concerns that it would be booed, that was certainly not the case for Trump. When he was shown on the video board toward the end of the performance, he was met with a chorus of boos.
However, those were not even the loudest boos that Trump heard during the day.
After the match, as Trump made his way across the field and onto the stage for the postgame ceremony, he was showered with boos, as shown in several videos from fans in the stands.
It was certainly not a welcoming reception from the Argentina and Spain fans in the stands.
Awkward Trophy Ceremony
Last month, it was announced that Trump would have the opportunity to award the World Cup trophy to the champion team following the final. This followed an awkward moment last year when Trump inserted himself into Chelsea’s trophy celebration after the team won the Club World Cup, which was also hosted in the United States, and refused to move out of the way as the team hoisted the trophy.
On Sunday, it happened again.
Trump handed the trophy to Spain, as planned, and offered his congratulations to a few of the players. However, instead of walking off the podium and allowing the team their celebration, Trump stood right with the team, refusing to move out of the frame.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino could even be seen trying to usher Trump out of the way and off the podium, but Trump still stood there awkwardly and smiled.
It was a bizarre and awkward moment, and it was pretty clear to everyone that Trump was not wanted and did not belong. One Australian broadcaster could even be heard saying “they’re gonna edit him out of that” after Trump crashed the celebration.
Trump Called Spain ‘Hopeless’ Just Days Before
While Trump was all smiles while handing the Spain players their medals and the trophy, the truth is that this was a bit of an awkward situation for Trump, as just days before, he claimed that he didn’t want “anything to do” with Spain, calling the country “a wasted cause.”
Trump’s comments about Spain came on July 8 during a news conference alongside Rutte as Trump blasted Spain for not contributing enough to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
“Spain is a wasted cause. We don’t want to do any trade business with Spain anymore, by the way. I’d like to cut it off,” Trump said just days ago. “Spain is a terrible partner in NATO. They don’t participate, they don’t pay. I don’t want anything to do with Spain. Cut off all trade with Spain, please. Including visits. We don’t want anything to do.”
“We don’t have to trade with them,” he added. “I don’t want to do any more trade with them. Make it immediately. Don’t even talk to them. They’re hopeless. Bad people.”
Obviously, Trump’s beef with Spain was with the country’s leadership, not the soccer team. Still, it had to hurt his pride to have to smile and hand a trophy to a team representing a country he called “hopeless” and “bad people” less than two weeks before.
