ASHBURN, VIRGINIA ― There weren't too many plays to remember in the Miami Dolphins vs. Washington Commanders joint practice on Wednesday, Aug. 12.
Rookie safety Michael Taafe had a pass breakup in the end zone to stop an 11-on-11 drive near the end of practice that led to all his teammates celebrating with him.
Quarterback Malik Willis, expected to play in Friday night's preseason opener, had a sideline pass intended for Malik Washington intercepted by Mike Sainristril for a Pick 6 interception return.
And rookie linebacker Jacob Rodriguez continues to be a ball hawk and is "ascending" as his veteran teammate Jordyn Brooks says.
But the player who continues to make a name for himself is rookie receiver Caleb Douglas.
Douglas is a factor. Douglas has speed. He has separation. He has range. And he feels he belongs.
"Play with confidence," Douglas said after practice. "Going out there, knowing the scheme, knowing where I'm supposed to be at on my landmarks and things like that. And honestly, I kind of just want to stay right there and make sure that I keep improving."
Douglas, a third-round pick from Texas Tech, continues to live up to his draft status.
"He's been really consistent," Dolphins coach Jeff Hafley said before practice. "He's made some flash plays and then he's made some plays where he needs to catch the ball. But he's just, he's probably been one of our most consistent guys and he showed up every day. So that's where he deserves to be at this point."
Where is Douglas now? Well, listed as a starter, deservedly, on Miami's preseason depth chart.
"Honestly, I didn't even see that," Douglas said of the depth chart. "First time I've heard that, you're right here... My thoughts? Oh, (shoot), you've got to keep working, man. You know what I'm saying? It's not in stone yet. You've got to make sure it's in stone."
Douglas, 6-foot-4, 205 has made general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan look good early.
And Douglas has emerged as a trusted receiver for quarterback Malik Willis.
"Stud," Dolphins tight end Greg Dulcich said. "He's making plays left and right. It's awesome, you guys saw it in two minute there. Yeah, he's showing up all over the field, so we're stoked to have him for sure."
On this day, Douglas had multiple catches from Willis over the middle and drew a penalty.
On this day, the Commanders defense held up well, in general, against Willis and his unit.
On this day, the Commanders offense performed well, in general, especially against Miami's secondary.
The practice was fine. The Dolphins were not punched in the mouth or knocked out, by any means.
We can say Washington appeared to "win" the practice.
It can also be said that the Dolphins appear to have a young receiver - Caleb Douglas - worthy of watching.
