MIAMI GARDENS – The Miami Dolphins are getting closer to putting on their pads with their third practice in T-shirts and shorts on Friday, July 31.
Miami is off Saturday and resumes training camp Sunday, the first day fans are allowed to watch practice. The next day will be first in pads in the Jeff Hafley era.

Here are three takeaways from the third day of practice.
In a camp in which the Dolphins are looking to develop wide receivers, rookie Caleb Douglas took a big step forward in the third practice. The third-round pick out of Texas Tech caught three balls, with one drop. One the first play of 11-on-11s, Douglas came back to the ball to make sure he caught it and not the defense. Malik Willis and Douglas hooked up for a back-shoulder completion on Willis' second pass and later Douglas made a nifty one-handed catch in the corner of the end zone.
Whatever you think of Willis, one thing is certain, he is more a threat running the ball than Tua Tagovailoa was. Willis showed off that running ability twice in practice No. 3, one ending with a touchdown up the middle. In 22 career games, six as a starter, Willis has rushed 74 times for 405 yards and four touchdowns. And that threat extends to the passing game. "When you have the threat of a quarterback, you extend plays," safety Dante Trader said. "Covering for three seconds is hard, so imagine covering for six seconds with Malik being able to run and gun it."
The coaches are putting an emphasis on takeaways, which is not unusual, but we have seen it paying off early. Whether it's the product of sloppy offensive play or the defense stepping up, we have seen about 10 takeaways the first three days of practice, including an Alex Austin pick on a pass tight end Will Kacmarek juggled in the third practice. "When you're competitive near or in the right windows, you're going to get takeaways," Trader said. "What you emphasize shows up and it's been showing up."
