USA TODAY Sports reports that Michigan basketball head coach Dusty May will leave the program after winning the national championship to fill the Dallas Mavericks' vacant head coaching position.
It's a decision that has sent shockwaves through college basketball and the NBA right before the first round of the NBA draft on Tuesday night. May appears to be in line to join the Mavericks just before they're on the clock with the ninth overall pick.
While there are many angles to this story, one of the most compelling involves May's former Wolverines who expect to hear their name called on Tuesday night.
USA TODAY Sports' latest mock draft pegs Aday Mara and Morez Johnson Jr. as lottery picks, with forward Yaxel Lendeborg slotting in two selections later. It's not inconceivable to think that the Mavericks were considering one of the three already, and that interest might spike with May on board.
Might May enjoy having Mara as another frontline player, as insurance to oft-injured centers like Dereck Lively II and Daniel Gafford?
Would May love to develop Johnson Jr., a player who might be a target for other power teams in the Western Conference?
Could May envision a world the jack-of-all-trades in Lendeborg does whatever it takes with the Mavericks to win games to replicate the success they had together at Michigan?
While May's arrival doesn't guarantee that the Mavericks go maize and blue at nine, it does continue a possible narrative that fans recently saw play out during the NBA Finals.
The New York Knicks used the power of friendship and camaraderie between Villanova alumni to win the championship, and Dallas might be following a similar blueprint. The Mavericks reportedly looked at hiring Duke's Jon Scheyer, which would have reconnected him with former Blue Devil Cooper Flagg.
Now that they've pivoted to May, Mara, Johnson Jr. and Lendeborg all feel like legitimate choices at pick nine.
