Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk has been a mainstay in the news over the last month for near daily posts on his Instagram account which have only poured fuel on the fire for more headlines.
Whether it is Aiyuk calling out the San Francisco front office, demanding to be cut, announcing he will sign with Washington 'tomorrow' if released or posting photos of himself in Commanders' apparel, it has been a near-constant storyline through the final slow stretch of the offseason. There's a possibility that this is all a ploy by Aiyuk to force the Niners to speed up their decision timeline, though there have been no signs as to whether it is truly making an impact other than leading current and former players to chime in on the situation. There is a chance it has an impact on Washington's thinking, though, and there may be evidence that provides credence.
Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic reported on Tuesday that the Washington Commanders were interested in a "highly incentivized" short-term deal, likely one year, should Aiyuk eventually become available. Yet that expectation was earlier in the offseason - before the social media activity that put his low-risk label into question.
While many have argued that Aiyuk has the right to speak up for himself after staying silent for nearly a year as reports and rumors from San Francisco emerged throughout the developing situation, the last 48 hours have been a rare break after no new Instagram posts or stories. His last post was a written statement to the NFLPA after reiterating he fired his agent Ryan Williams, which The Athletic confirmed officially happened, after not working with him for months.
Aiyuk will also have to prove himself on the field given he has yet to play since week seven of the 2024 season, nearly two years ago at the start of training camp, to add additional questions as to whether Washington will end up being all-in on a possible move.
If Aiyuk shows even remotely close to capable of what he showcased during 2023 and 2024, then the questions at wide receiver may be answered for head coach Dan Quinn and the Washington Commanders. But after months of all types of news that was anything but an official roster move by San Francisco, questioning when the Niners would make a roster move, it might time to question whether Washington will be so willing to make a move.
The only question would be - if not Aiyuk, then who? While Washington has shown signs of being content with the current room, the obvious name would be Stefon Diggs, who could opt to ink with a team closer to the start of the regular season. Former Commander Deebo Samuel is also available who, like Diggs, could see his market pick up over the next six weeks while Washington was suggested as a fit for Tyreek Hill, who has a question mark coming off his major injuries in 2025.
