Los Angeles Dodgers two-way star Shohei Ohtani, who the Dodgers originally slated to start Wednesday against the Athletics, had his outing moved back to Friday against the San Diego Padres.

Instead of Ohtani on Wednesday, the Dodgers will utilize their bullpen for the final game of their trip to Northern California.

After the Dodgers’ three-game series against the Athletics—which they’ll aim to win with a victory on Tuesday—they’ll host the Padres in a four-game set. Roki Sasaki will pitch the first of those four games Thursday night.

Ohtani’s prolonged rest between starts may be due to a lingering problem in his knee, which manager Dave Roberts said he is still dealing with.

“I don’t think he’s 100 percent with his knee. But as far as his swing mechanics, where he’s at, he’s on balance. He’s 100 percent in the box,” Roberts said.

The Dodgers’ management of Ohtani’s fitness is understandable, as he has been the best player in baseball for a number of years. This season, Ohtani has a 1.58 ERA through 13 appearances, striking out 86 batters in 79.2 innings pitched. The Dodgers’ six-man rotation ensures Ohtani gets plenty of rest already, so he is sure to be near the top of his game when he returns to the bump.

That’s not all he’s done, though, as he’s continued posting MVP-level numbers on offense as well. Through 81 games as the Dodgers’ designated hitter, Ohtani has 18 a team-high 18 homers and a .958 OPS, also driving in 50 runs so far this season.

How Did Shohei Ohtani’s Last Start Against the Padres Go?

While Ohtani has a great career against the Athletics on the mound, posting a 2.71 ERA through nearly 70 innings pitched over the course of his career, he still has something to prove against the Padres.

He has pitched three times against the San Diego Padres, allowing six earned runs through 11 innings. His last start against the Padres was his best to date, as he didn’t allow a run through five innings pitched on his way to a win against the Dodgers’ division rivals.

He’ll look to have a similar impact on the game in his outing Friday.
