Los Angeles Dodgers two-way star Shohei Ohtani continues to turn heads with his amazing performances almost every day, but he isn’t content with his game yet.

Ohtani threw six no-hit innings against the Colorado Rockies, though allowed a run after a walk, hit by pitch, forceout and groundout. He exited the game following the sixth inning, as he had thrown 99 pitches by that point. After the game, Ohtani expressed frustration with his inefficiency.

“I would rather … take the days where I get hit a little bit but still be efficient,” Ohtani said, “rather than walking and just not being able to pitch deeper into the game.

“…The takeaway, if any, the positive is that they didn’t really have any hard hits.”

Ohtani had a similar reaction to his start against the San Diego Padres on May 20, where he threw just five innings but didn’t allow a run, but said his feeling “wasn’t great” following his outing.

“Just overall feel,” Ohtani said last week. “I have a pretty high standard as far as performance. It didn’t really match.”

What Has Shohei Ohtani Done This Season?

While Ohtani may not be satisfied with his performances over the last two outings, there’s no questioning how special the season he has put together so far is. After allowing just his fifth earned run of the season Wednesday, Ohtani’s ERA rose to 0.82. That mark leads all pitchers with at least 40 innings pitched, let alone 50.

Additionally, Ohtani hit a leadoff homer for the Dodgers in the bottom of the first inning, marking his second start in a row where he hit a leadoff homer. He has nine jacks on the season, as well as 30 RBIs. His OPS isn’t quite where it was last year—he ended the season with a mark of 1.014—but still sits well above league average at .882.

When is Shohei Ohtani’s Next Start?

After sweeping the Colorado Rockies, the Dodgers have an off day Thursday and will host the Philadelphia Phillies for a three-game weekend series. Ohtani will certainly not participate in that matchup, at least on the mound, but will likely make his next pitching appearance against the Arizona Diamondbacks next week.

The Dodgers will travel for a four-game set against the D-Backs from Monday to Thursday, and will look to record a second consecutive sweep over their division rivals this year.

Is Shohei Ohtani’s disappointment warranted?
