Amid great goalie play and a steamy afternoon at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, the West All-Stars won a low-scoring All-Star Game, 12-9, on Sunday.

For his efforts, West second half goalie Brett Dobson was named the MVP, finishing with 11 saves. For good measure, he also won the postgame relay race, out-dueling first half East goalie Liam Entenmann, who made 13 saves in the first 24 minutes.

“We were down at halftime and we said it could either go one of two ways: we could mail it in, or we can try and chip away at the lead. I made that first save, I think it was on CJ, I felt like I was in the zone a little and it helped me from there,” Dobson said postgame. “A lot of guys have this week off, so I'm looking at the big picture perspective for me, I missed the first two games for NLL stuff, so I’m getting my feet under myself and I enjoyed [this game] a lot. It was a lot of fun and I felt like maybe I could have made an argument for [winning All-Star Game MVP] last year, but I'm happy to be taking it this year.”

The game hinged on an 9-0 run that completely flipped the action and broke things open, and the de facto game-winner came with 8:30 to go in the fourth quarter.

After Chad Palumbo attempted an Air Gait that didn’t convert and the East committed a turnover in transition, Chris Kavanagh finished a BTB assist from his brother Pat to five the West a 9-8 lead that they didn’t relinquish.

But pointing out Palumbo’s failed Air Gait attempt is not a chirp; it’s an acknowledgement of the heater he continues to be on. He finished with a goal and an assist, including a highlight-worthy fake BTB and finish.

“Being on this campus and this stadium, on July 4th, the 250th year of our beautiful country — cool place to be,” Palumbo said.

Logan Wisnauskas led the West with three goals and an assists, while Brennan O’Neill, Andrew McAdorey and Jake Piseno each put up two points, as did Palumbo and both the Kavanaghs. The East was led by three goals from Marcus Holman and a goal and two assists from Rob Pannell.

Halftime was highlighted by Mason Woodward winning the fastest shot competition with a rip of 115 miles per hour.
