With just six more places at the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be determined, a litany of nations from around the world are in the hunt to secure one of the final places at the summer tournament.

Twelve countries from across Europe have entered the UEFA playoff round, battling for four World Cup places. They have been drawn into four mini-brackets, with just one spot available to each four-team pod.

Meanwhile, two more places are up for grabs at the FIFA Interconfederation Playoff, with six teams battling in World Cup co-host Mexico for those pair of slots.

Do UEFA World Cup qualifiers go to extra time?​


If the scoreline is level at the end of the 90 minutes of regulation in a UEFA World Cup qualifying playoff match, the game will indeed then progress to extra-time.

The rules follow traditional guidelines, with an extra 30 minutes of football being contested across two 15-minute halves.

If the game is still level at that point, the match will then progress to a penalty shootout where a winner will be decided.

In the 2026 intercontinental playoff matches, extra-time will be utilised should the match be level after 90 minutes of regulation.
