The Wheelersburg boys and girls track and field programs continued running roughshod over their competition Saturday, as the Pirates won the OHSAA Division III Southeast District Boys Track and Field Championship as well as the OHSAA Division IV Southeast District Girls Track and Field Championship in events that were held at two separate sites in Vinton County and Albany Alexander, respectively.

Wheelersburg boys

In addition to clearing 22 feet, three inches in winning the OHSAA Division III Southeast District Championship in the long jump on the opening day of the Wheelersburg boys’ meet at Vinton County, Kenyon Evans won the 100 meter (10.89), 200 meter (22.32), and high jump (six feet, four inches) events to sweep his individual events in clean succession.

Along with Evans, Ison Emnett and Hunter Lawson went one-two in the shot put, with Emnett throwing 57 feet, one-and-a-half inches to win that event and Lawson finishing second with a 53-foot, nine-inch hurl.

Wheelersburg’s Cashton Adkins and Ison Emnett added in second and third place finishes in the discus, posting throws of 159 feet, 10 inches and 159 feet, nine inches to place second and third.

Wheelersburg’s Hunter Henderson (15.47) also advanced to regionals with a second-place time in the 110 meter hurdles, while the boys 4-by-100 (second), 4-by-200 (second) and 4-by-400 (fourth) meter relay units all advanced to regional meet competition with times of 43.97, 1:31.16 and 3:31.89, respectively.

Those individuals and relay units helped Wheelersburg claim a 125.5-point total in winning the OHSAA Division III Southeast District Championship at Vinton County High School.

Portsmouth boys

Also competing up in OHSAA Division III, the Portsmouth Trojans’ boys track and field roster will send a healthy contingent of boys athletes to districts as well.

Portsmouth’s JJ Purcell not only posted a 9:38.35 to claim second overall in the 3200 meter run, but finished third in the 1600 meter run with a 4:23.76.

Fellow teammate Reid Click ran a 1:55.19 in the 800 meter run to finish second, while the boys 4-by-100 meter relay squad (44.46) finished third to join Wheelersburg’s 4-by-100 group in qualifying.

Portsmouth finished eighth in the boys Division III District rundown with 32.5 points.

Wheelersburg girls

Much like the boys squad, the Wheelersburg girls were stout themselves.

Three different Wheelersburg girls track and field athletes won events at the OHSAA Division IV District Track and Field Meet at Albany Alexander, as Jordan Jolly ran a 16.53 to win the 100 meter hurdles, Ryleigh Harness posted a 1:00.86 to win the 400 meter dash, and Ella Hochstetler posted throws of 149 feet in the discus and 43 feet, three inches in the shot put to win both events handily.

Behind them, a slew of talents finished inside the top-four positions.

Maggie Burke finished second to Jolly in the 100 meter hurdles (16.98), Preslee French and Callie DeHart finished second and fourth in the 300 meter hurdles (49.84 and 50.73), Natalie Weaver finished third in the 400 meter dash (1:03.75), Giselle Miller finished fourth in the 1600 meter run (5:29.46), Kalenna Adkins finished fourth in the discus throw (106 feet, six inches), Jolly finished third in the pole vault (seven feet, 10 inches) and fourth in the long jump (15 feet, four-and-a-quarter inches), Penelope Salyers finished second with a 33-foot, 10-inch throw, and Grace Woodward finished fourth in the high jump (four feet, 10 inches), edging teammate Laikyn Hall by clearing the same mark in one less attempt for the final regional qualifying position.

Along with the 11 girls who qualified for the regional tournament individually, the Wheelersburg girls 4-by-100 and 4-by-200 meter relay units each finished first to advance to region as well.

Wheelersburg’s girls squad scored 148 points to win the OHSAA Division IV Southeast District Championship.

Minford girls

Minford, who finished fifth at the district meet, got regional qualifying efforts from its 4-by-100 and 4-by-200 relay teams, who posted times of 54.34 and 4:32.15 to place first and second respectively.

Individually, Marley Rhodes finished second in the 100 meter dash (13.25) and third in the 400 meter dash (1:01.86), while Paiton Creech finished third in the 100 meter hurdles (17.94).

The Minford girls finished fifth in its district with 59 points.

Valley boys

Valley, who scored 52 points in its own district rundown, was led by prolific thrower Branson Barnett, who won the shot put (49 feet, three-and-a-half inches) and finished third in discus (131 feet, two inches).

Brayden Lewis, who ran fourth in the 1600 meter run, clicked off a 4:50.29 to also qualify for the regional meet, while the boys 4-by-800 meter relay squad finished second to join Barnett and Lewis at that stage.

Valley scored 52 points to finish seventh.

Minford boys

Minford, with 38 points, finished right behind Valley, with Peyton Caudill winning the 100 meter (11.23), 200 meter (22.42) and 400 meter (51.03) dashes to represent the Falcons as its lone regional qualifier.

West boys

West, who nabbed 41 points on the opposite side of the district standings, also placed eighth as a team like Minford. Star sprinter Keagan Salem finished second in the 100 meter dash (11.21), third in the 200 meter dash (22.73) and second in the 300 meter hurdles (40.27), while Brayden Bays claimed second in the 110 meter hurdles (18.11).

Austin Ramsey finished fourth in the discus throw (119 feet, five inches) to round out the regional qualifiers on West’s end.

South Webster boys

The South Webster boys, who finished third in the OHSAA Division V Southeast District Meet at Nelsonville-York, had three individual qualifiers along with two relay team qualifying units.

South Webster’s Braden Mantell won both the 1600 (4:33.92) and 3200 (10:18.71) meter runs while Brayden Weist (10:33.43) finished second in the 3200 and Aiden Rowland third in the 1600 (4:40.98) to join Mantell as regional qualifiers.

The boys 4-by-400 and 4-by-800 meter relay units finished first (3:37.69) and second (8:45.39) to also earn qualification.

Clay/Green/Notre Dame/Valley boys and girls

Lastly, the trio of Clay, Green and Notre Dame each had qualifiers in multiple events between all three schools.

Notre Dame saw Ryan Purcell win the 800, 1600 and 3200 meter runs with times of 2:24.44, 5:22.61 and 11:34.90, while the boys 4-by-200 meter relay unit (1:40.04) also qualified.

Clay’s Billy Miller qualified for the regional meet in both the 110 and 300 meter hurdles by placing third in the 110 hurdles (17.33) and fourth in the 300 meter hurdles (43.94), while the girls 4-by-100 meter relay squad finished fourth with a mark of 56.07 to also qualify.

Green had two individual qualifiers — one each in boys and girls — as Green thrower Caleb Lewis finished fourth in the discus throw with a 123-foot, four-inch mark and Green distance runner Sydney Bainer finished fourth with a time of 13:23.08 in the 3200 meter run.

The Valley girls chipped in the final regional qualifying effort as Mia Rose ran a 27.53 in the girls 200 meter dash to claim fourth in that event.
