With a litany of honorees — 14, to be exact — the Wheelersburg boys and girls track and field programs led the charge with its heavy-hitting dose of all-district honorees.
Between the OHSAA Division III Southeast District realm, which the Wheelersburg boys are in, and the OHSAA Division IV Southeast District, which the Wheelersburg girls competed in, both Ryan Brown and Ryan Willis swept Southeast District Coach of the Year honors in their respective divisions.
The Pirates also swept the OHSAA Southeast District Division III Male Track Athlete of the Year (Kenyon Evans) and Southeast District Division III Male Field Athlete of the Year (Ison Emnett) accolades, while Ella Hochstetler won the OHSAA Southeast District Division IV Female Track Athlete of the Year for her efforts.
GIRLS
Rarely challenged throughout the season due to her pure dominance as a throwing talent, Wheelersburg junior Ella Hochstetler rolled to convincing district championships in both the discus (149 feet) and shot put (43 feet, three inches) and then won OHSAA Division IV, Region 13 Championships in both the discus (151 feet, 11 inches) as well as the shot put (45 feet, three-and-a-quarter inches).
Hochstetler ultimately became the first Wheelersburg Pirate to win a state championship since fellow throwing talent and Wheelersburg alum Paige Emnett won the OHSAA Division III State Championship in discus in 2019. Hochstetler posted a throw of 148 feet, 11 inches to win the state title in that event. In shot put, Hochstetler made it two All-Ohio honors for the weekend, earning third place in the Division IV ranks with a 42-foot, one-half inch toss.
Following Hochstetler, Jordan Jolly (16.53, 100 meter hurdles) and Ryleigh Harness (1:00.86, 400 meter dash) each won district championships at the OHSAA Division IV level and advanced to regional competition in those events. Harness, Hochstetler, Jolly and Weaver then also took home the girls 4-by-200 district crown with a 1:48.96.
BOYS
With four All-Ohio honorees and five district titles in its program in the outdoor season, the Wheelersburg Pirates' track success reads off like a book.
That was led by senior standout Kenyon Evans, who made a full-blown assault on Wheelersburg record books as well as personal bests during the course of the season.
Evans won a Scioto County-best four district championships on his own, claiming OHSAA Southeast District Division III Championships in the 100 meter dash (10.89), the 200 meter dash (22.32), the high jump (six feet, four inches) and the long jump (22 feet, three inches).
Regionally, Evans cleared six feet, three inches in the high jump to finish fourth and 22 feet, 11 inches in the long jump to finish second, then stepped it up several notches when the lights were at their brightest, popping off with a six-foot, six-inch high jump to finish third statewide in the OHSAA Division III ranks and nab a 24-foot, one-and-a-half inch long jump to finish as the OHSAA Division III State Runner-Up in the high jump.
In the latter event, Evans would've won state championships in the OHSAA Division I, Division II, Division IV or Division V ranks, as his mark was only bettered by Cleveland Glenville's Jay'vier Kerr, who posted a 24-foot, six-inch long jump to win.
Fellow senior multi-sport athlete Ison Emnett was also quite impressive, to say the least.
Winning a district title with his 57-foot, one-and-a-half inch toss in the shot put and adding in a third-place finish in discus with a 159-foot, nine-inch throw, Emnett also won the Division III, Region 8 Championship in the shot put by notching a 57-foot, 11-inch mark and then nabbing a fourth-place mark in discus, accumulating a 156-foot, six-inch throw there.
Emnett would go on to add an All-Ohio honor of his own in the shot put, finishing as the OHSAA Division III State Runner-Up in the event with a 58-foot, nine-and-a-quarter inch performance.
Cashton Adkins, who was a state qualifier, finished second (159 feet, 10 inches) in district competition and third (166 feet) at the regional stage in the discus before stepping up further himself with a 171-foot, 10-inch launch to finish third in the OHSAA Division III realm in the discus throw while nabbing a All-Ohio effort of his own.
Along with those three individuals, Hunter Lawson also obtained All-Ohio honors. Lawson, who returns to lead Wheelersburg's core next spring, posted a 53-foot, nine-inch shot put to finish second at the district stage, then added in a 49-foot, four-and-a-quarter inch shot to earn the fifth and final qualifying spot at the regional meet. Lawson then shot up to fourth place in the final rundown after launching a 57-foot, three-and-three-quarters inch toss in the shot put.
Evans, along with Elijah Brown, Braylon Rucker, Clark Weller and Logan Whitt, also helped Wheelersburg's 4-by-100 and 4-by-200 meter relay units qualify for the state meet. Both relay squads finished fourth at regionals (43.47 and 1:29.86) to advance to the state meet after claiming second-places in the district stage with marks of 43.97 and 1:31.16.
Wheelersburg's boys squad ultimately finished fourth in the OHSAA Division III Track and Field Championship standings.
