Did Wilks just save his job?

Would a loss to a Beathard-led 49ers team combined with an 0-5 start have spelled disaster for Wilks and key members of his staff? A part of me believes he may have actually saved his job today.

With that said, I want to congratulate Steve Wilks on his first victory as head coach. I’ve been critical of his leadership but today they did what they had to do to get a “W”. I’m sure a huge weight has been lifted off his shoulders, and honestly I can only imagine the turmoil he’s been in and the lack of sleep he’s dealt with over this last month.

A win is a win but man are there some glaring concerns. Outside of the turnovers that were created today the negative trends on the stat sheet have continued. The 49ers dominated and nearly doubled the Cardinals production in almost every category.

Below are the numbers from today’s game:

Plays: 49ers - 92; Cards - 49
Total Yds: 49ers - 447; Cards - 220
Passing Yds: 49ers - 300; Cards - 164
Rushing Yds: 49ers - 147; Cards - 56
3rd Down: 49ers - 10-17; Cards - 2-12
1st Downs: 49ers - 33; Cards - 10
Time of Poss: 49ers - 40min; Cards - 19min

This still doesn't look like a competent football team

Can't run, can't stop the run

That's a bad combo

I don’t think SW was at risk at all.

He is staying at least till the end of the season.

Wilks isn't going anywhere this year, and my guess is he'll be here next year too. Different OC, but same head coach. Get used to it.

I do believe Bidwill is a very loyal person and the leash is most likely at least two years. But I could see a potential 2-14 season producing change at the end of the year.

A completely fraudulent win against an injury riddled team. He’s not fooling anyone. And the earliest he was ever going to be fired was after the season. Chandler Jones willed the team to victory and prevented a complete meltdown of the locker room and destroying the young players, confidence.

Oh I 100% agree...But I would have suspected a loss today may have ensured changes at the end of the season.

Way too much football to be played to make a prediction at this time.

Still disappointing that DJ despite a couple TD's, still isn't getting untracked. This was supposed to be a run blocking OL unit. Apparently not. So what else if anything do they have in the scheme? I liked the WR sweep, but in terms of getting Johnson the ball in the flat with blockers, in crossing routes underneath, I haven't seen enough innovation there.

I predicted Rosen would debut in the 2nd half of the Bears game, that after game 1 we would lose the next 2 for sure and only have a possibly a chance against the niners. However, preseason I had predicted that this team would definitely beat the over/under by winning 6+ games and that isn't turning out to be great prediction yet.

Wilks will not be fired during the season. What is possible though, is if we have more meltdowns on either side of the ball that MB might fire McCoy and/or Halcomb, and Wilks resigns in protest. I see that as unlikely that even if they forced him to fire his coordinators that he would resign.

What I think is more probably is that McCoy doesn't make it through the season, especially if the players haven't bought into the scheming. Once players that have respect, clout and judgement (someone like Fitz for example) to have reason to doubt their OC instead of chalking it up to growing pains, it makes it harder for mgt/ownership to try to keep a sinking ship aloft.

I think if anyone saved their job this game it was McCoy. Our offense still sucked, but the play calling was not as bad and apparent in weeks past. Instead, the blame on offense for this game was on the players first and foremost, and by proxy SK. The players were dropping balls, being undisciplined, being lazy and all in all exposing are huge lack of talent compared to the rest of the league. There is not a single team in the league with a shallower bench of skill position players.

This is our whole offensive skill players that have enough talent to be on the roster...
DJ: Can't run because the oline can run block for crap. Isn't being used enough in the passing game.
Kirk: Without him we might as well just be a team that runs the wildcat on every play because you could just double cover Fitz. He is the only player who is proving to a reliable receiver, but like Fitz, there aren't enough targets.
Fitz: Fitz is Fitz, but the scheming isn't using him in ways to make the most of him and he isn't getting enough targets either.

The only one who has produced anything worth mentioning besides these guys is RSJ and he is a drop master, and turning out to be a drive stalling liability. I was rooting for him because he looked like an upgrade from JG, but there has to be a better TE on the waiver wire.

McCoy might be terrible, but SK is even worse for putting together this team.

Looking at the schedule that's leftover, I see maybe 2 more wins on the slate. We'll likely beat the Niners at home, and we'll likely beat the Raiders. Those are the only two wins I see. Maybe Seattle at home if we're lucky. Gonna go either 3-13 or 4-12. And we'll find a way not to have the #1 pick. Which sucks.

Nah...this team could have started 0-11 and finish 5-11 and nobody would be saying, but you lost at SF in week 5 so you're fired...they would all be clamoring about 5 straight wins to end the season...kinda like the Niners last year.

The thought by some was that McC was not Wilks choice. The hug seemed to support that train of thought.

This kind of play keeps up and he will not be back next year. That said McCoy could go in a couple of weeks if this continues.

if that is truly the case--

then it was Keims choice (obvs) -- and it seems that is just breaking a fundamental rule

I do remember that in the Whisenhunt search -- MB and SK really liked McCoy, but he took the SD job, which make them move on to consider Arians ( and in fairness, it took a convo between Whis and Arians to get him to consider the Cards as well)
