Did Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla deserve to win the NBA's 2026 Coach of the Year award? There were a number of other solid options in the running that were snubbed for the honor. And while it is a regular season honor, at least a handful of those teams managed to advance further in the postseason, hinting at a more substantive job by those coaches than what went down with Boston.
But if we want to stick purely with the stretch of play the honor is intended to cover, Mazzulla wildly overachieved in the 2026 NBA regular season, elevating a team expected to be somewhere in play-in tournament range if not below it to what was widely seen as a potential title contender heading into the playoffs.
