The Detroit Tigers have another left-handed arm making serious noise in their farm system.
MLB Pipeline has moved Ben Jacobs to No. 5 in its updated ranking of Detroit’s top prospects, making the 22-year-old the highest-rated pitcher in the organization. Only Max Clark, Bryce Rainer, Josue Briceño and Jordan Yost sit ahead of him.
That is a notable rise for a pitcher Detroit selected in the third round of the 2025 MLB Draft.
Jacobs has split the 2026 season between Single-A Lakeland and High-A West Michigan, posting a 4.70 ERA across 61⅓ innings. The run prevention has been uneven, but his ability to miss bats has been difficult to ignore.
The 6-foot-1 left-hander has recorded 89 strikeouts, good for 13.1 per nine innings. He has allowed only 50 hits while carrying a 1.32 WHIP.
Jacobs was especially sharp during his four appearances with Lakeland. He posted a 1.08 ERA with 24 strikeouts and six walks across 16⅔ innings before advancing to West Michigan.
The transition to High-A has brought tougher results. Jacobs owns a 6.04 ERA in 44⅔ innings with the Whitecaps, though he has still struck out 65 batters. That swing-and-miss production helps explain why evaluators remain so bullish on his upside.
The Tigers drafted Jacobs out of Arizona State after he struck out 120 batters over 83⅔ innings during the 2025 college season. His control remains an area to watch, but left-handed pitchers with his strikeout ability tend to move quickly when the command begins to settle.
Detroit has spent years building pitching depth throughout the organization. Jacobs’ rise gives the Tigers another potential starter to track behind the club’s more established young arms.
He is not close to a finished product, and his High-A numbers show there is still work ahead. The stuff, though, is beginning to separate him from the rest of Detroit’s pitching prospects.
