The Detroit Free Press Marathon has a new medical provider to take care of participants and provide first aid on the course.
The Detroit Medical Center, the closest hospital and level 1 trauma center to the start line on Fort Street, will service the event, the marathon announced in a news release earlier this week.
A team of nearly 100 healthcare volunteers including doctors, nurses and first-responders will work the race weekend, which expects about 30,000 participants in the eight offered races, with resources backed by the DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital.
Dr. Erin Brennan, an emergency medicine expert at DMC Detroit Receiving and DMC Sinai-Grace and a runner, will be the lead physician for the marathon, according to the news release. DMC emergency physician Dr. Trifun Dimitrijevski, also known as Dr. D, will support the race. He has been leading the Detroit Grand Prix Medical Center and been involved with the race in Detroit since 2007.
“Our experience and knowledge help keep people safe and healthy during these large, fun but potentially overwhelming events in downtown Detroit,” Dimitrijevski said. “From stubbed toes to chest pain, we’re prepared to address any medical emergency, big or small."
Henry Ford Health served as the previous medical provider for the marathon.
The Health and Fitness Expo is planned for Friday, Oct. 16, and Saturday, Oct. 17. The shorter races — 1 mile, 5k, kids marathon and Little Detroit Dash — take place on Saturday, Oct. 17. The international and Motor City marathon and half marathons take place on Sunday, Oct. 18.
