The full marathon, which spans 42.2 kilometers, was scheduled to take place on Friday amid growing excitement and demand for the event.

The full marathon race of the 15th International Jerusalem Winner Marathon was canceled due to weather conditions, the Jerusalem Municipality announced on Tuesday.

The race, which spans 42.2 km, was scheduled to take place on Friday, with remaining races moved to earlier times.

The decision was made "out of full responsibility for the safety and health of the runners, participants, and staff, and following a thorough review of all data and forecasts," said the municipality following a professional situation assessment.

The municipality, together with all security, medical, and production authorities, continues preparations to hold the event in a safe and optimal manner, and will update the public on any further changes as required, it added.

"Long-distance running may endanger participants’ health, even among experienced runners," said the Jerusalem Marathon's accompanying physician Prof. Naama Constantini of Shaare Zedek Medical Center. "Our responsibility is to place public health above all else and ensure that sporting activity takes place under the safest possible conditions."

"In addition," she added, due to the earlier start times of the races, participants are advised to pay close attention to and maintain proper sleep hours before the race. I wish all participants of the International Jerusalem Winner Marathon a safe and enjoyable run.”

Marathon most unique in the world

The marathon, which was postponed from its original March date due to the ongoing US-Israel war with Iran, was described by Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion as a reflection of the city's spirit.

"This event marks a return to normalcy and the resilience of Jerusalem, Israel’s capital," he said, adding, "We are proud to bring the city back to life and to host the first major sporting event since the start of Operation Roaring Lion."

The marathon is considered one of the most unique in the world, with its historic landscapes attracting both elite and amateur runners.
