The Detroit Lions made three roster moves Tuesday as players reported for the start of training camp in Allen Park.
Detroit announced that defensive lineman Jay Tufele has been released, while defensive back Christian Izien and offensive lineman Christian Mahoganyhave been placed on the active/non-football injury list.

The transactions create an early shakeup along both lines of scrimmage and add another health-related storyline to a Lions secondary already dealing with uncertainty.
Detroit signed Tufele in April to compete for a reserve role along the defensive front.
The former fourth-round pick appeared in 12 games during the 2025 season, making two starts. He has played 46 games across his NFL career after entering the league with Jacksonville in 2021.
Tufele faced a crowded path to the roster. The Lions’ defensive-line group includes Alim McNeill, Tyleik Williams, Levi Onwuzurike, Mekhi Wingo, Tyler Lacy and several younger players competing for rotational snaps. Detroit listed Tufele among 18 defensive linemen entering camp, making the position one of the deepest groups on the roster.
His release also gives Detroit added flexibility after agreeing to terms with veteran linebacker Troy Reeder.
Mahogany’s placement carries the most immediate significance.
The former sixth-round pick entered camp projected to start at left guard after appearing in 11 games and starting all 11 during the 2025 season. Detroit’s expected first-team offensive line had Mahogany lining up between Penei Sewell and new center Cade Mays.
The Lions did not disclose the nature of Mahogany’s condition.
Because he was placed on the active/NFI list, Detroit can activate him once he passes his physical and receives medical clearance. The move does not guarantee that he will miss regular-season games.
His absence will create more early camp repetitions for Ben Bartch, Miles Frazier, Juice Scruggs and Giovanni Manu. Detroit already planned to create competition behind Mahogany, but those players may now receive a more serious look with the starters.
Izien will also begin camp on active/NFI.
Detroit signed the versatile defensive back in March after he spent three seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Izien has appeared in 45 career games, making 15 starts while recording 158 tackles, three interceptions and three forced fumbles.
He had been receiving significant first-team work during organized team activities while Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph remained unavailable. His ability to play safety, nickel cornerback and other sub-package roles made him an intriguing piece for defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard.
With Branch and Joseph already opening camp on PUP, Izien’s placement leaves Detroit temporarily thinner in the secondary.
That should mean more work for Chuck Clark, Avonte Maddox, Thomas Harper, and Dan Jackson during the early practices.
The Lions’ first round of training camp transactions included one release and two injury designations.
Jay Tufele’s departure trims an overcrowded defensive-line competition. Christian Izien and Christian Mahogany remain part of Detroit’s roster and can return once medically cleared.
Mahogany’s status deserves the closest attention because he entered camp as the projected starting left guard. Izien’s absence also matters for a secondary already waiting on Branch, Joseph and other key contributors.
Neither NFI placement is automatically a long-term concern.
For now, it gives Detroit’s depth an earlier test than expected.
