The Detroit Lions have revealed the roster they will take into training camp, setting the stage for weeks of competition in Allen Park.
Jared Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Aidan Hutchinson, Penei Sewell and Kerby Joseph headline a group built to contend immediately. The real intrigue will come near the bottom of the depth chart, where veterans, recent draft picks and undrafted rookies will battle for limited jobs on the final 53-man roster.
Goff enters camp firmly established as Detroit’s starter, while Teddy Bridgewater returns as the experienced backup.
Rookie Luke Altmyer rounds out the quarterback room. The former Illinois standout will get an opportunity to develop behind two quarterbacks with extensive NFL experience.
There is no mystery at the top. The question is whether Altmyer can show enough during camp and the preseason to convince Detroit that he belongs on the active roster rather than the practice squad.
St. Brown and Jameson Williams sit atop a deep receiving group that also includes Isaac TeSlaa, Greg Dortch, Cedrick Wilson Jr. and Dominic Lovett.
Detroit will also evaluate Malik Cunningham, Tom Kennedy, Tarik Black, Lucky Jackson, Lawrence Keys, Tay Martin and Jackson Meeks.
The Lions already know what they have in St. Brown and Williams. The larger battle involves the final two or three receiving spots.
Can TeSlaa take another step? Does Dortch give Detroit the quickness and return ability it needs? Can Wilson’s experience earn him a role?
Those questions will be answered one practice at a time.
Few position groups will be watched more closely than cornerback and safety.
D.J. Reed, Roger McCreary, Rock Ya-Sin and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. lead the cornerback competition. Rookie Keith Abney II will also receive an early chance to prove he can contribute in the slot.
Detroit’s versatile defensive backs include Brian Branch, Christian Izien, Avonte Maddox and rookie Aamaris Brown.
At safety, Joseph is joined by Chuck Clark, Thomas Harper, Dan Jackson and Loren Strickland. Branch’s ability to move around the defense gives the Lions additional flexibility, but he probably will not return until Halloween or so.
Penei Sewell remains the foundation of Detroit’s offensive line, but several roles around him must be sorted out.
Christian Mahogany, Tate Ratledge, Miles Frazier and Juice Scruggs will be among the players competing for interior snaps. Giovanni Manu continues his development, while rookie Blake Miller joins Sewell as one of the roster’s listed tackles.
Cade Mays and Seth McLaughlin provide options at center.
Detroit has invested heavily in protecting Goff and powering its running game. Camp will determine whether the next group of linemen is ready to maintain that standard.
