The Detroit Lions are adding another experienced coach to their offensive staff.

Two months after he nearly beat them on the field, and two weeks after he interviewed for the then-vacant offensive coordinator job, the Lions are hiring ex-New York Giants interim coach Mike Kafka to a to-be-determined spot on their coaching staff, a person familiar with the hire but not authorized to discuss it publicly because the deal is still being finalized confirmed to the Free Press.

NFL Network first reported the news.

Kafka, who played six NFL seasons as a backup quarterback with seven different teams, was Giants offensive coordinator under Brian Daboll in 2022-25 before taking over as interim coach when Daboll was fired Nov. 10.

The Giants took the Lions to overtime 13 days later before losing, 34-27, on a 69-yard touchdown run by Jahmyr Gibbs.

Kafka was one of 10 candidates Lions coach Dan Campbell interviewed for offensive coordinator after firing John Morton two days after the season. The Lions hired former Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Drew Petzing to be their play caller last week.

It's unclear what role Kafka will have this fall as the Lions are still sorting out their coaching staff.

Tight ends coach Tyler Roehl left to become offensive coordinator at Iowa State after the season, and assistant head coach/receivers coach Scottie Montgomery will interview for the Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator job, NFL Network reported.

Kafka started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at his alma matter, Northwestern, in 2016, and was an offensive quality control coach, quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs before joining the Giants.
