Aug. 10—MITCHELL — Dell Rapids PBR is back in the quarterfinals of the Class B state amateur baseball tournament.

Behind a quick start, PBR booked its ticket to the final eight by dispatching Garretson 6-4 in a second-round tournament clash on Sunday night at Cadwell Park. It's the third time in four seasons that PBR is among the quarterfinalists.

PBR (18-5) will play the Parkston Mudcats in the first quarterfinal matchup at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

As part of a marathon 35-minute first inning, Garretson posted two runs in the top half, only for PBR to answer with four in the bottom. It was a lead the Cornbelt League power never relinquished.

PBR added one run in the third to create a three-run cushion. When the Blue Jays climbed back within 5-4 in the top of the sixth, PBR replied with another run in the bottom of the inning.

In a last-gasp rally effort, Treyson Buckneberg hit a single and legged it to third base on an outfield error to lead off the ninth, bringing the tying run to the plate. But a popout followed by back-to-back strikeouts ended the game.

Though PBR starting pitcher Drew Sweeter was dinged up by the Garretson bats early, he turned in an eight-inning performance complete with seven strikeouts against seven hits, three walks and two earned runs allowed. Brett Mogen earned credit for a three-out save.

Weston Hansen drove in three runs on a bases-clearing double, while Riley Hoffman and Brayden Pankonen each added two hits for PBR,

For the Blue Jays, Robin Chute had two hits and two runs batted in. Dylan Kindt lasted just two innings in his start and was the pitcher of record for Garretson, as Dustin Steckler pitched six innings in relief.

Garretson finished the year with a 14-4 record.
