Aug. 8—MITCHELL — For the second-straight year, perennial powers Winner/Colome and the Dell Rapids Mudcats collided in the first round of the Class B amateur baseball tournament.
And for the second year in a row, the Cornbelt's Mudcats got the better of their Sunshine counterparts, as Dell Rapids earned an 11-3 win on Saturday afternoon at Cadwell Park.
With the win, Dell Rapids (17-5) advanced to a second-round matchup with a fellow Cornbelt club, the Hartford/Humboldt Gamecocks, set for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Gamecocks held off the Parkston Rays 2-1 in the first game on Saturday.
Dell Rapids Legion player Connor Hanson entered as a pinch hitter in the third inning and promptly tripled to open the scoring. Later in the fifth, he provided two more runs batted in on a two-out bases-loaded single that made it 8-0 Mudcats.
Winner/Colome loaded the bases in the top of the sixth inning on back-to-back singles and a walk. Landon Calhoon, who was honored pregame as a recipient of the Chandler Bakley and Reed Harter 'Heart of the Game' memorial scholarship, delivered his own two-RBI single for the Pheasants.
But the Mudcats got right back to it in the seventh, adding three runs, including another Hanson RBI, drawing within a run of ending the game early by run-rule.
In their attempt to string together a late rally, the Pheasants scored a run and loaded the bases with one out in the eighth, but they were unable to pull any closer.
Hanson and Treyse Eastman each had three hits for the Mudcats, and Landon Ruesink drove in two runs with a home run. Reece Arbogast grabbed the pitching win in a six-inning start, and Nolan Burchill closed it out from there.
For Winner/Colome, Drew DeMers and Austin Richey had two hits apiece, as Derek Graesser had a hit and drew the team's lone walk. Connor Hopkins was charged with the pitching loss in his four-inning start.
Winner/Colome's season ended with an 11-8 overall record.
Of note, the Cornbelt improved to 2-1 in the first round with four teams yet to play, while the Sunshine dropped to 2-3 and has no further representation in the opening round. The Cornbelt won both head-to-head meetings between the two leagues.
