Jul. 21—MITCHELL — Goals of reaching the Class B state amateur baseball tournament start to be fulfilled this week, as the district playoffs begin across South Dakota.
Seven Class B district tournaments will decide the 32 teams that will participate in the state bracket, which begins on Wednesday, Aug. 5 and plays out over 12 days.
Here's a quick look at the four Mitchell-area districts that will be in action to decide the berths to Cadwell Park.
District 3B
At Chamberlain
Dates: Saturday, July 25 through Thursday, July 30
The district tournament bracket is not quite finalized at the time of this writing but we know Kimball/White Lake has made capturing the No. 1 seed in the Pony Hills League look easy. The Nationals won their first 11 league games of the season until they lost to Four Corners out west on July 12 for their only league setback of the season. Four Corners is the No. 2 seed and is looking for its first district championship since 2023 when it kicks off play on Saturday. KWL has played in the last four district championship games and won the last two. They played Burke in each of those last two title games.
District 4B
At Humboldt
Dates: Friday, July 24 through Saturday, Aug. 1
Seven of the 32 Class B state tournament spots are on the line in Humboldt for the Cornbelt League's postseason. It starts Friday when No. 8 Salem and No. 9 Flandreau Blue Teal face off, followed by No. 7 Flandreau Cardinals and No. 10 Baltic at 8 p.m. Dell Rapids PBR, the state champions from 2024, took the No. 1 seed with a 14-4 league record, and then both Dell Rapids Mudcats and Hartford/Humboldt Wood Ducks tied for second place in the Cornbelt standings with a 13-5 record. The Mudcats, who have played in the last three district title games, claimed the No. 2 spot by virtue of a season sweep of the Wood Ducks. Canova is the No. 4 seed after a 12-6 league mark. As usual, the Cornbelt had plenty of notable upsets during the season and that might carry over the district tournament. No. 6 Madison and No. 7 Flandreau Cardinals defeated the Dell Rapids Mudcats during the season, and No. 1 PBR was downed by ninth-seeded Flandreau Blue Teal in the final game of the regular season. In 2025, Madison was the district champion after being seeded third, while the Gamecocks reached the 2025 Class B title game after being the No. 6 seed in the district tournament.
District 5B
At Platte
Dates: Thursday, July 23 through Friday, July 31
Alexandria returns to a familiar spot in District 5B, holding the No. 1 seed for the tournament set to get underway Thursday. The Angels were 11-3 on the season and tied with No. 2 Parkston Mudcats at the top of the standings but earned the No. 1 seed due to their season sweep of the Mudcats. Alexandria will take on No. 8 Corsica on Thursday in the first round, while the Mudcats take on No. 7 Mount Vernon on Friday. Reigning state champions Parkston Rays were 9-5 in Sunshine League play for the season and will hold the No. 3 slot when they take on Dimock/Emery on Friday in the first round. Winner/Colome is the No. 4 seed and handed Alexandria two losses during the regular season. The Pheasants will play tournament host and No. 5 Platte in Thursday's late game. Alexandria has won nine of the last 13 district championships, including the 2025 title over Winner/Colome, 7-5. The Pheasants and Dimock/Emery have two district titles in each in that span dating back to 2013, as well.
District 6B
At Menno
Dates: Thursday, July 23 through Saturday, Aug. 1
Tabor is the No. 1 seed for the South Central League postseason, finishing with a 10-4 record in league play. The Bluebirds have averaged 10.3 runs per game, but interestingly, didn't lead the Class B contingent of the league in runs scored. That was held by Lesterville, which is seeded fourth and plays No. 5 Freeman in the tournament's opening game on Thursday. The other first-round games include No. 3 Menno against No. 6 Crofton and No. 2 Wynot vs. No. 7 Irene, both on Friday night. Tabor also had the only win of the SCL season over Class A Yankton, which won the league at 13-1. As the top seed holding a bye to the semifinals, the Bluebirds don't have to play until 6 p.m. Tuesday. With a seven-team bracket, District 6B builds in a little cushion for the higher seeded teams, should they lose in the first round. The two lowest seeds to lose in the first round then need two wins to reach the state tournament, while the highest seed only needs to win a winner-take-all game on July 30 to secure a state berth.
