The Colorado Avalanche are going to need a new GM soon, but not currently. Chris MacFarland is off to a Central Division rival. Also, it appears Jared Bednar is remaining as head coach. Speaking of coaches, the Vancouver Canucks officially have one. Oh, the Stanley Cup Final got underway and it was quite the entertaining opening game.
All that and more on this edition of Deen’s Daily — June 3.
Colorado Hockey Now
What an unbelievably newsworthy Tuesday around the Colorado Avalanche. The writing was on the wall that this was a possible outcome for more than a week, but it all came together pretty quickly.
Still, looking back, you have to feel for Chris MacFarland for the way it ended. He put a great team on the ice, and, for many reasons, it fell short in the Western Conference Final. He’s on to bigger things, and there shouldn’t be any hard feelings toward him for taking a promotion. But he really, really wanted to win this year. In the interactions I had with him in Vegas last week, you could tell that winning it all this year meant a lot to him.
I’d be interested to see how much he speaks about the Avalanche’s lost season during his presser later this morning in Nashville.
As for the Avalanche, Joe Sakic will take over general manager duties for the time being. How long will that last? And how will he do without MacFarland by his side?
Sakic will meet with the media in about a week. We’ll get official confirmation from him then, but it sounds like Jared Bednar isn’t going anywhere. Is that the right move?
