May 29—Decatur City Schools has named Nicholas Holland as the new head varsity baseball coach at Decatur High School.
The DCS board approved the hire Thursday evening.
Holland, a native of the Shoals area, attended Deshler High School before continuing his baseball career at Dyersburg State Community College in Tennessee. While at Dyersburg State, he was part of the 2016 TCCAA/Region XII championship team and earned all-conference honors.
He later transferred to the University of North Alabama, where he was a two-year starter for the Lions. During his senior season, Holland led the team in hitting and fielding percentage.
Following college, Holland played three seasons of professional baseball in Germany and France.
According to Decatur City Schools, Holland has spent the past seven years coaching and training players in the private sector, helping develop more than 20 All-State players and 13 college signees. Over the last two years, he also founded the 256 RiverDogs travel baseball organization, which now includes 15 youth teams.
DCS said Holland believes coaching extends beyond athletics and emphasizes toughness, discipline, grit and accountability as the foundation of team culture.
