Feb. 18—HANCEVILLE — Decatur Heritage's quest for a return trip to the Final Four came to an early end Tuesday night.
The Class 2A, No. 5 Eagles fell to No. 6 Cold Springs 65-58 in overtime of the Northwest Regional semifinals.
"They played well and banked in a 3 at the end that was killer," said Decatur Heritage head coach Jason Marshall. "We had our chances. That's just how it goes sometimes."
Heritage led 17-14 at the end of the first quarter and 28-25 at halftime. But Cold Springs started the second half with a 7-0 run to take a lead they would never relinquish.
Cold Springs dominated inside, scoring 38 points in the paint and going 13-of-20 from the free throw line.
"They're huge inside," Marshall said. "They do a good job of using the body, and they're just hard to guard."
Decatur Heritage rallied to force overtime, but two key 3-pointers during extra time sealed the victory for Cold Springs.
Jordan Davis led Decatur Heritage with a game-high 22 points, while Sam Gardner had 12 points and Karter Jeffreys added 11. Cash Dickerson led Cold Springs with 21 points.
With just one senior set to graduate from the team, Decatur Heritage is poised to make a return trip to the regional tournament next year. For now, though, Marshall said his players will have to lick their wounds.
"This one stings," he said. "It's going to take some time to recover."
