Davis claimed by Brewers
SI.com’s Jon Heyman reported that Diamondbacks left-hander Doug Davis has been claimed on waivers by the Milwaukee Brewers.

We are able to confirm this, but from the sound of it, a deal does not look likely, at least not at this point. However, the people we’ve talked to wouldn’t rule it out.

We’re told the Brewers did not submit the claim for the purpose of blocking another team; they have interest in Davis.

But the Diamondbacks, who wouldn’t trade him for lower-level prospects pre-July 31, aren’t going to give him away for nothing. They’re not looking to dump salary.

Also unclear at this point is the timetable. Once a team is awarded a claim, the sides have 48 hours to work out a deal.

Good move by the Brewers, they need starting pitchers badly. Hopefully the Diamondbacks can get a nice package in return.

Sure Davis wouldn't mind too much either if we wanted him to return next season as he used to play for Mil

I was confused by why the D'backs didn't trade him for mid or low level prospects in the first place. I heard a radio interview w/ Davis a while back and he expressed that he wanted to have a chance to win this year and after this year he'd strongly consider coming back to AZ in the offseason. In an ideal world the D'backs would've shipped him out for the rest of the year, got a few prospect and then resigned him. I guess maybe they didn't want to risk it.

Nothing doing with Davis
By Tom Haudricourt of the Journal Sentinel
Aug. 13, 2009 1:17 p.m.

Sticking to major league rules, general manager Doug Melvin still declined to say today that the had put in a waiver claim on Arizona lefty Doug Davis.

But, assuming reports are true that he has, it doesn't look like Davis will be coming to Milwaukee.

"I'm not engaged with conversations with Arizona," said Melvin.

Melvin did say that he spoke with Arizona GM Josh Byrnes yesterday. But he wouldn't say the Brewers had claimed Davis. The Brewers did try to acquire Davis before the non-waiver deadline July 31 without any luk. And apparently the D-Backs' demands for a solid prospect haven't come down.

"People know the value of pitching," said Melvin. "Probably over 100 guys have been claimed. It all depends what you want to give up.

"It's not that we haven't tried (to get pitching). It's just the caliber of players you're giving up."

So, assuming the Brewers don't change their minds about what they'd be willing to give up, the D-Backs will recall Davis from waivers and that will be that. They wouldn't put him back on waivers because then he could be claimed without compensation.

Apparently the D'backs want to give Davis a one-year contract and he wants a multi-year.

Placing him on waivers seems to be posturing for position on this issue.

This has block move written all over it by MIL, why else would you put a claim on a player knowing the asking price for him hasn't come down. Did MIL think we'd pull a TOR and just give Davis away?
