The 2024 college football season showcased some surprising performances from various teams and players. The College Football Playoff further highlighted these teams, as several made their first appearance in the playoffs.
Teams such as the Boise State Broncos, Penn State Nittany Lions, SMU Mustangs, Indiana Hoosiers, Arizona State Sun Devils and Tennessee Volunteers participated in the playoffs for the first time. Among them, the Nittany Lions advanced the furthest, winning two playoff games before losing in the semifinals to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on a last-second field goal, 27-24.
One team that earned significant respect despite their loss was Arizona State, which fell 39-31 to the Texas Longhorns in double overtime. Running back Cam Skattebo garnered much attention during their playoff run, rushing for 1,711 yards and scoring 21 touchdowns, along with 605 receiving yards and three touchdowns in 2024.

Skattebo has officially signed with the NFL after being selected by the New York Giants in the 2025 NFL Draft. On his podcast, "See Ball Get Ball with David Pollack," the college football analyst said he believes the Sun Devils won't take a step back, attributing this confidence to the quarterback.
"I think people who don't watch football much thought, 'Skattebo, flash in the pan,'" Pollack said. "No, you'll see. You'll get it this year. That's why he was No. 2 on my returning quarterback board. (Sam) Leavitt is a freaking baller. Dude's an absolute stud."
Leavitt had an impressive first season at Arizona State after transferring from Michigan State following his freshman year. He threw for 2,885 yards, 24 touchdowns and recorded six interceptions while completing 61.7% of his passes. Additionally, he rushed for 443 yards and five touchdowns.
Although his stats against Texas weren't particularly eye-catching, Leavitt earned respect for his courageous performance. He passed for 222 yards and threw one interception, while also gaining 60 yards on the ground. Under constant pressure, he was sacked three times.
Now, he is leading a team that has just captured a Big 12 championship and secured a spot in the College Football Playoff. Arizona State returns 79% of its production, ranking No. 2 in college football. The team will kick off the season on August 30 against Northern Arizona.
