The Washington Huskies and Ohio State Buckeyes have needed extra innings in their first two meetings this season, but Saturday night's game brought a different result as the Huskies came away with a 5-4 victory.
Freshman right fielder Daniel Porras was the hero after he stepped to the plate with two runners on and one out in the eleventh inning and smoked a base hit into right to push left fielder Jackson Hotchkiss across the plate for the game-winning run. Porras went 2-for-4 on the day with the run batted in and a run scored in a game where the Huskies had to battle back.
After Ohio State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, Hotchkiss mashed his third home run of the season to cut into the lead, before the Buckeyes tacked on two more runs in the third. The Huskies responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, thanks to a two-run single from designated hitter Braeden Terry and an RBI single from Landon Young, who went 2-for-4 on the day.
Then, the game turned into a pitcher's duel until Porras untied the contest for good in the eleventh.
Washington's bullpen put together a tremendous outing, allowing just two hits over eight scoreless frames. Liam Lierman worked the first 3 innings and let up just a hit and 2 walks with 3 strikeouts before giving way to Gunnar Nichols, who went the game's final 5 innings and also allowed a hit and 2 walks, but with 7 strikeouts as he improved to 2-2 on the season.
Lincoln McVicker took the loss for the Buckeyes after he was able to last just 1/3 of an inning, and surrendered the game-winning run on 2 hits and a walk.
The Huskies improved to 7-11 on the season and 3-2 in Big Ten play with the win, and two teams will play the rubber match of their three-game series on Sunday afternoon, with first pitch set for 1:00 p.m. PT.
