It hasn't taken long for right fielder Daniel Porras to make an impact for coach Eddie Smith and the Washington Huskies, and on Monday afternoon, he was named the Big Ten's Freshman of the Week.
Porras played a critical role as the Huskies went 3-1 on the week, with a victory over Seattle University and their second-straight conference series win over the Ohio State Buckeyes. Highlighted by a walk-off single in the tenth inning to even the series, he put together a strong week at the plate.
He put together a 6-for-17 stretch at the plate for a .353 batting average, with 3 doubles, a home run, 4 runs scored, and 4 runs batted in, which was good for a .405 on-base percentage and .706 slugging percentage, giving him a 1.111 OPS.
During his first year on campus, Porras has quickly established himself as one of the most reliable bats in Smith's lineup. He has played in all 19 games and has started all of them except for UW's season opener against North Carolina State.
He's batting .268 on the season with a team-high 6 doubles, while his 19 hits, 13 runs scored, 13 runs batted, 8 walks, and 4 home runs are all second on the Huskies. Porras has also added an .867 OPS, which is a big reason that the Huskies are moving closer to .500 after starting the season 1-9.
At 8-11, Smith's team is looking to take its next step towards even on Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m. PT against Saint Martin's.
