Dan Patrick Weighs In On Emmitt

Smith in a familiar situation

By Dan Patrick

Next season former Dallas Cowboys running back Emmitt Smith will be in the backfield for the Arizona Cardinals. At first glance, this looks like a good deal for everyone involved.

The Cardinals get a future Hall of Famer, a great deal of positive publicity and a probable spike in game attendance. The Cowboys look good for allowing Smith the opportunity to start over elsewhere. And Smith gets a chance to prove that he's still an elite back in the NFL.

Smith believes he can still rush for 1,300 yards. And with a different team, I'd say that goal would be within reach. But the Cardinals bear too many similarities to his former team.

And when you take a closer look, you realize that the Cardinals have a lot more missing pieces to their puzzle. And while signing a record-breaking running back is a good start, Smith can't be the only matching piece. He can't be the X factor that makes the rest fit.

That said, Arizona may not be ideal place for Smith to showcase his longevity. He may be on the short end of this deal.

The Cardinals inexperienced pass offense will allow opposing defenses to focus on stopping Smith. And while the Cardinals young offensive line (including three former first round and second round draft picks), may be able to provide more protection, Smith will face many of the same obstacles that he's seen in recent years in Dallas.

Fellow newcomer, Jeff Blake is an experienced quarterback who can throw the deep ball and move the offense downfield. But the Cardinals lost star receiver David Boston to free agency and barring a trade or free agent signing, they still haven't filled that position. The five remaining receivers on that roster have a combined 66 catches for 787 yards and five touchdowns in their career -- numbers pedestrian for a single receiver much less five.

The Cardinals can't expect that production to keep defenses honest; it simply won't happen. Last season, 40 players had more yards, 34 had more catches and 35 had more touchdowns. Blake is a very good quarterback but he can't be expected to keep up his end of the deal when he doesn't have anyone to throw to.

It should seem like old times for Emmitt.

Okay everyone Flame away about how Patrick is a complete and utter jackass and he has no idea what he's talking about as far as our promising trio of McAddley, Dogcrap, and Drek!

Por que, why? Patrick hit the nail on the head as far as our offense looks at this point!

Once the Cardinals get a legit starting WR and C I will disagree with his analysis.

Flame away?

Why flame? The opinion of an "announcer" is just as valid as any joe schmo out there. After all...we "upgraded" the QB position, and our young guy's looked decent last year with "the fake."

Right?

I would guess that between now and start of camp in Flagstaff that the Cards will try to add a #1 reciever (fill in your own definition of #1 reciever). In fact they have publically said they intenced on shoring up the position.

That being the case, I recall it was only last year that there was a lot of "national" criticism of the Cardinals for going into the season with an unproven group of RB's. While being a fair assessment at the time, I would say that the Card's coaching staff's appraisal of the situation was proven out and the RB position was not a weakness for them last year.

I will have to give them the benefit of the doubt this year with respect to the WR corps!!! If they believe they can go into the season with the receivers on hand, then I will trust that evaluation until it is proven wrong.

Additionally, as has been stated in multiple threads already... this season Freddie Jones will be better utilized as a weapon!

First and Foremost

Dan Patrick has upon occasion dumped the Cards whenever he has gotten a chance, but I am certainly not going to argue with his premise though it is skewed due to the time factor. I mean, as Rod Graves says we should judge the finished product when camp opens up. Who knows what will happen???? Maybe by some mysterious luck of the draw we will trade for Randy Moss(highly doubtful of course) but for arguments sake the let's wait. The loss of DB will hurt though, no matter what happens. I knew it then and I know it now and us fans will certainly know this next year and the following years.

Ignor Patrick- he is out of touch with this team

Maybe Dan thinks these recievers will still be on the side lines, and all the balls thrown at Boston, will still be thrown to him? But he won't be catching any of them, Because you can't insert some one who hasn't got the stats to be there? He is good at sports center, but his views are alittle whack.
With Emmitt in the line up, if they plan on stopping him that will leave the passing game open for much improvement. If they play it honest then Emmitt will get his 1300 yards!

At this point he's right, however...

Just like trying to judge a draft the day after is silliy, so is judging an offseason before it's over. The same goes for several of these national writers.

As far as the recievers go, two things..

First, it's not like any of them got to play a full season, so of course they don't have much in the way of stats.

Secondly, our QB couldn't beat 10 man fronts, with Boston, Sanders and Jenkins, so why do we expect that he could have with Gilmore, McCaddely, and Kasper?

he has a point but I think the two teams are alot different...

We have a descent Oline, and a better QB than them...

Also we have a very good blocking FB and Jones aint no slouch...

We need a #1 real bad, but other than that I think the "O" is in very descent shape...

Now the "D" is a different thread... ;)
