Dan Lanning is a defensive head coach. He's made a career out of his schematic brain, able to create some of the most dominant and complex schemes on that side of the ball in college football over the last decade. So if you told Oregon Duck fans back in 2021 when Lanning was hired in Eugene that over the next half-decade, his best position in the recruiting world would be at wide receiver, I don't think many would have believed you.

However, that's been the case. On Tuesday afternoon, Oregon landed a commitment from 5-star WR Dakota Guerrant, the No. 23 overall player and No. 4 WR in the 2027 class. He is going to be a staple of Oregon's signing class and is yet another pass-catcher who now stands in a long line of blue-chippers that Lanning has grabbed at the position.

Think I'm over-selling things? Let's break it down.

Before Lanning came to Eugene, the highest-rated WR to ever sign with the Ducks — and the only 5-star WR in program history — was Cameron Colvin, a member of the 2004 class. The second-highest-ranked WR for Oregon was 4-star Troy Franklin in the class of 2021.

Since Lanning got to Eugene? Well, things have changed. The commitment from Guerrant — and assuming he signs in December — Oregon will now have a 5-star WR in five consecutive classes.

  • 2023 Class: Jurrion Dickey
  • 2024 Class: Gatlin Bair
  • 2025 Class: Dakorien Moore
  • 2026 Class: Jalen Lott
  • 2027 Class: Dakota Guerrant

Not bad for a defensive head coach. Of course, there is a long way until signing day, and holding onto Guerrant won't be easy with as high-profile of a prospect as he is. But so far, the proof has been in the pudding when it comes to elite pass-catchers choosing to come to Eugene to continue their careers. So to all the 5-star WRs in the 2028 class, take notice.
