The day is here.

Free agency kicks off at 12:00 PM ET. The pool is not as deep as expected, or as it has been in years past, but there are still some names on the market, and the Boston Bruins’ front office will be busy today.

Right-shot defensemen are one of the more pressing needs for the black and gold. They drafted one, Cullen McCrate, but Andrew Peeke remains unsigned, so the Bruins need help immediately. There are a few names out there, including options who played top-pair minutes this past season, but the Bruins will have to move some cap out if they want to land the big name.

In other Bruins news, the third day of development camp is today. Check out the schedule and Day 2 notes below.

Late last night, reports surfaced saying Zach Werenski rejected a trade to the Dallas Stars, and that points to him having a desire to stay in the East. Beyond that, the Panthers landed a familiar goalie, and a few former Bruins either moved or signed yesterday.

Happy Canada Day to our friends up north, catch up on Bruins and league news in today’s Daily Bean:

Boston Bruins

RIGHT-SHOT D: The Bruins need help on the right side of the blue line today. The market has a big name, some players who played top-pair minutes, and then it drops off. With free agency opening at noon, check out some of the right-shot defensemen hitting the market.

BLANAR: At last year’s development camp, 2025 fourth-round pick Vashek Blanar said he wanted to improve his defensive game. He feels like he has, and Adam McQuaid agrees.

Blanar is committed to UMass for the 2026-27 season.

DEV CAMP: Development camp continues today at Warrior Ice Arena in Brighton. It’s open to the public, and the whole group hits the ice at 9:30 AM. One session today. Scrimmages tomorrow. Check out the roster and this week’s schedule.

DAY 2 TAKEAWAYS: Some quick notes from Day 2 of development camp:

  • I am still very impressed with Yuri Ivanov. The Bruins’ second-round pick looks sharp and quick in the goal, and he stopped a lot of what he saw.
  • Cooper Simpson and Will Zellers both have dangerous shots. They will be fun to watch at North Dakota next season.
  • Nils Bartholdsson looked much more noticeable on Day 2.
  • Camp invite David Deputy (Miami OH) is very comfortable out there.

GENDRON: Alexis Gendron, who was not issued a qualifying offer by the Bruins, signed a one-year AHL contract with the Providence Bruins yesterday.

NHL News & National Hockey Now

Sportsnet: Things have taken a nasty turn in Columbus. Zach Werenski used his full no-movement clause and rejected a trade to Dallas. The trade was agreed to on Monday night and set to be completed this morning, but it seems that his preference is to stay in the Eastern Conference.

TSN: Pierre LeBrun, Darren Dreger, and Chris Johnston dove into the trade market yesterday. Werenski is interested in the Tampa Bay Lightning, and more on Connor Hellebuyck, Dylan Larkin, and Vincent Trocheck.

New Jersey Hockey Now: The Devils traded goaltender Jacob Markstrom to Florida for forwards Evan Rodrigues and Jesper Boqvist. Two AHL players were also involved in the deal. James Nichols breaks down the trade and dishes out some grades.

Florida Hockey Now: Just a day after acquiring his negotiation rights, the Ducks signed AJ Greer to a four-year deal. Greer’s contract comes with a $4.25 million cap hit and a 10-team no-trade clause.

Sportsnet: Jeremy Lauzon signed a six-year deal with the Vegas Golden Knights last night. The former Bruin will carry a $4 million cap hit.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: The Penguins and Golden Knights made a small deal yesterday, but the Golden Knights are landing another old Bruins defenseman. Parker Wotherspoon is on his way to Vegas in exchange for Kaeden Korzack. The Penguins are retaining half of Wotherspoon’s salary, leaving the Golden Knights with a $500K cap hit.

The Penguins have four righty defensemen, and it sounds like they will be busy today.

New Jersey Hockey Now: The Devils are keeping 25-year-old Russian Arseny Gritsyuk around for three more years. He had 31 points (13-18–31) in his first NHL season and will carry a $3.25 million cap hit until 2028-29.

Sportsnet: The Utah Mammoth signed Sebastian Cossa to a two-year deal worth $4 million; they traded No. 23 (acquired from BOS) to land the Grand Rapids Griffins star goalie.

Philly Hockey Now: Do it, Philadelphia. Bring Claude Giroux home. Will James writes that the Flyers should reunite with their longtime captain during free agency today. Later on Tuesday, Pierre LeBrun reported that Giroux is headed to the UFA market.
