The NHL offseason slowed down after July 1, but there were still plenty of moves around the league.

The Boston Bruins were not as busy yesterday, but development camp wrapped up at Warrior Ice Arena. The prospects split into four teams and competed in a 3-on-3 tournament, and then a game and shootout followed. Adam McQuaid, the Bruins’ director of player development, spoke afterward and said he was happy with how the week went.

Also, per David Pagnotta, the Bruins had a deal in place with the Oilers to land Darnell Nurse, but the player on the other end of the trade was not willing to waive their trade protection to play in Edmonton.

Elsewhere around the league, the Capitals are keeping Alex Ovechkin around for his 22nd NHL season. Connor Bedard left his off-season training session holding his shoulder. More teams made some signings yesterday, and the Flames landed Jake Middleton from the Wild.

Viktor Arvidsson met with the Detroit media, and the Senators are allowing trade-ins for Brady Tkachuk jerseys.

Happy Friday, and Happy Third! Catch up on Bruins and league news in today’s Daily Bean:

Boston Bruins

DEV CAMP TAKEAWAYS: Bruins development camp closed yesterday. 31 prospects (not including Will Moore, who was limited to off-ice activities) took to Warrior Ice Arena this week. Check out the five key takeaways.

I wanted to give another shoutout to Connor Nee for joining Boston Hockey Now for the week at Warrior Ice Arena and providing BHN with high-quality photos and videos. Stay tuned for more of Connor’s work in the next few days.

DFO Rundown Insider Edition (video via YouTube): David Pagnotta reported that the Bruins were in on Darnell Nurse, but a player exercised his trade protection (not specified whether no-trade or no-move, but he repeated “no-trade” when referring to the player’s clause) to avoid playing in Edmonton.

“There was a deal, our understanding is, there was a trade in place with the Bruins that would have sent Nurse to the Boston Bruins for a player on their team that currently has no-trade protection,” said Pagnotta. “And that player was not willing to waive their no-trade protection in order to make this trade happen.”

How many Bruins have trade protection? (2026-27 season)

NMC: David Pastrnak, Charlie McAvoy, Jeremy Swayman, Elias Lindholm, Hampus Lindholm

NTC: Casey Mittelstadt (9 team no-trade), Morgan Geekie (full no-trade), Nikita Zadorov (16 team trade list), Pavel Zacha (8 team no-trade), Will Borgen (15-team no-trade), Tanner Jeannot (full no-trade)

NHL News & National Hockey Now

Washington Hockey Now: Alex Ovechkin is not going anywhere just yet. The Capitals re-signed the 40-year-old yesterday to a one-year deal with a $4.25 million cap hit. He pockets an extra $4.75 million if he plays in 10 games this season. The games played bonus rolls over to the following season.

Sportsnet: The Flames acquired Jake Middleton, a second, third, and fourth-rounder from the Minnesota Wild yesterday. Blake Coleman and Olli Maatta are going to Minnesota.

The Wild also added Maxim Shabanov (1x$1.6M) and re-signed Zach Bogosian (1x$1.25M) and Nick Foligno (1x$900K).

Sportsnet: This did not look good. While taking a summer skate in Vancouver, Chicago forward Connor Bedard fell and awkwardly landed on his shoulder. He skated off the ice holding his left shoulder.

BHF (video via ): Here is the video of Bedard’s injury.

I have video of Connor Bedard leaving practice today with a left shoulder injury, as first reported by @RyanmcgregorCHI. You can hear him in severe pain as he leaves the ice: pic.twitter.com/MySM1UwLht

TSN: Jakub Dobes signed up for three more years in Montreal. Yesterday, he put pen to paper on a deal with a $5.36 million cap hit and said the money is not what’s important to him. Dobes went 29-10-4 with a 2.78 GAA and .901 SV% last season.

Ottawa Senators (via ): The Ottawa Senators are allowing their fans to exchange a Brady Tkachuk jersey for 40% off in the team store. The jersey has to be from Fanatics, which only took over NHL jersey rights starting in the fall of 2024.

Out with the old and in with the new

From July 3-7 at Ottawa Team Threads at @CdnTireCtr you can trade in your officially licensed Fanatics Brady Tkachuk stitched jersey and you can save 40% on regularly priced merch! pic.twitter.com/4cTl639KbH

Detroit Hockey Now: The Dylan Larkin trade request had no impact on Viktor Arvidsson’s decision to sign in Detroit. The Swedish winger was focused on himself and what he’s going to bring to his new team, and it looks like he viewed Detroit as a desired destination. Bob Duff has more on Arvi, including how much he will fit on a team so desperate for 5-on-5 scoring.

Arvidsson goes from Marco Sturm, who was an assistant coach while he was in LA, to Todd McLellan, who was the head coach.

New Jersey Hockey Now: Sunny Mehta met with the media on Thursday and said he was excited for Nico Daws to get an opportunity after the Jacob Markstrom trade. A few hours later, they signed David Rittich (1x$1M). Last season with the Islanders, Rittich went 14-10-3 with a 2.76 GAA and .894 SV%.
