FOUNTAIN SPRINGS — Southern Lehigh had a District 11 Championship title it had to resolve for the first time in four years on Tuesday.

That’s exactly what the Spartans (20-5) did, leaving Blue Mountain’s (20-5) bats cold and the basepaths flowing with energy in a 3-1 win to win the District 11 Class 5A Championship title.

“They battled and stayed up in the dugout the whole time and it was a real team feel today,” Southern Lehigh coach Todd Miller said. “That’s what I’m most proud about.”

Gabe Moscato tossed four innings of one run ball for the Eagles before Jaden Holland and Parker Grady shut down Blue Mountain the rest of the way. Gabe Moscato and Colton Sams each drove in runs for the Spartans lineup.

“Gabe didn’t have his best stuff but he battled for four innings and kept us in the game,” Miller said. “We knew we’d be in this situation all year and the pitchers were fantastic all day for us.”

Southern Lehigh started on the offensive in the top of the first when Moscato singled to right field to score Grady for the 1-0 lead.

Riley Sebastian got the start for the Eagles on the mound and worked 6.2 innings, allowing just three runs on eight hits.

Blue Mountain struck back immediately in the bottom of the first when Aiden Finn grounded into a fielders choice to the shortstop to score Sebastian to knot the score at 1-1.

Moscato found his flow in the top of the second, recording a strikeout and a pair of groundouts. He finished his start in the fourth by recording three groundball outs.

“They didn’t strike out a whole lot and we knew they wouldn’t so spotting pitches we had to be on both sides of the plate with what pitches we threw,” Miller said. “We battled and worked with a few of us.”

Adam Fritts provided a critical play for the Spartans in the top of the fourth when he bunted back to the pitcher to score Luke Kawczenski for the 2-1 lead following a leadoff base hit.

Each teams traded baserunners until Southern Lehigh squeaked their third and final run across in the top of the seventh. Sams singled on a line drive to center field to score Jeremy Yeakel-Mendez for the 3-1 lead.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the way they competed,” Miller said. “We didn’t execute at all and we just battled and stayed in it.”

Grady got the save on the mound in the bottom of the seventh, ending the game with a swinging strikeout and the 3-1 championship win.

Yeazel-Mendez led the Spartans with three hits and Grady had another two hits. Josh Hoover led Blue Mountain’s lineup with two hits while Brady Strause, Evan Setlock, Andrew Blehm and Sebastian also had hits.

Clemas followed Sebastian on the mound for the Eagles, earning the final out in the seventh on a groundout to shortstop.
