Curtis Mead had a painful debut with his new team. In his second plate appearance with the Boston Red Sox last night, the third baseman suffered a left wrist contusion off a hit-by-pitch and exited the game.
The injury occurred less than two days after Boston acquired him from the Washington Nationals in exchange for left-handed pitcher Connelly Early. Boston valued Mead's slugging, as his 17 home runs are now second on the team behind Willson Contreras' 21. It was a risky move, however, as Mead hasn't flashed much power in the past while Early is a 24-year-old rising star with five more years of team control.
The Red Sox wound up beating the Oakland Athletics 4-2 last night, and Mead admitted he was disappointed about not contributing more to it.
"I was super disappointed," said Mead, who struck out in his first plate appearance. "I wanted to come here and help the team, and I wanted to play. So, yeah, it's frustrating."
Red Sox manager Chad Tracy said postgame Mead's X-rays were negative, so it appears the slugger won't miss much time, if any. Still, Mead is expected to undergo more tests today.
