Chicago Cubs center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong is making his case to win his first ever National League MVP award. Given his all-around impact, he has a strong possibility to do so, although his main focus is on taking Chicago on a deep postseason run.
The 24-year-old left-handed slugger has posted a .287 batting average, .388 on-base percentage, .934 OPS, 26 home runs and 71 RBIs across 118 games.
He has swiped 30 stolen bases already and accumulated 7.4 WAR, which leads the league. A big portion of his value also comes from his defense in center field, where he grades out as one of the best outfielders in baseball.
Ahead of Sunday’s series finale against the Kansas City Royals, Crow-Armstrong was not in center field. This marks the second straight game he has remained in the lineup but only as the designated hitter. Manager Craig Counsell revealed the reason behind the decision when speaking with reporters.
“Pete’s dealing with what a lot of the players are dealing with. He’s tired and I’m trying to recharge some batteries as best I can right now,” Counsell said, via Meghan Montemurro of The Chicago Tribune.
The good news from Counsell’s message is that the absence is not due to anything injury-related. Crow-Armstrong will likely return to the field Tuesday against the Washington Nationals for a series opener, as Chicago has an off day Monday giving him an extra day of rest.
The Cubs acquired Tyrone Taylor from the New York Mets at the trade deadline and he has been subbing in at center field, and given his own defensive abilities the Cubs can afford to give Crow-Armstrong the rest he needs without sacrificing anything in the field.
